President Benjamin Dirkmann sent to security holders Coffin's report detailing visits to counties with 2 million of the 5 million outstanding loans and notes that local agents bred losses. Poor examiner reporting and asset depreciation mean large losses. Harper County Kansas loans show some promise while areas west show poor security values.
On the Yioughio sheny river near McKeesport a small flitboat carrying Mr and Mrs John Thompson Eliza Thompson their two year old baby Priscilla Mr and Mrs Richard Smith their daughter and Robert Smith fifteen overturned. Thompson and his two year old daughter perished while attempting a rescue. Richard Smith drowned with his daughter after saving his wife.
Governor Nichols vows to veto the lottery bill but predicts a two thirds majority in both houses will override. The lottery amendment is expected to pass at the polls amid urgent need for funds to build high levees along Mississippi river districts. Anti lottery factions warn of potential bloodshed as Louisiana remains deeply split on the issue.

Berlin July 7 The German federal rifle meeting opened with a grand procession to the town hall from the Brandenburg gate. The line was arranged by nationality with Americans ahead of other foreigners. New York Independent Corps members led the Americans in carriages, while rifle groups depicted the history of German shooting associations since the thirteenth century. Herr Von Forckenbeck welcomed the visitors.
