The Banking and Currency committee met on the 22d to discuss substituting two per cent twenty five year bonds for existing bonds with no vote. The Invalid Pensions committee considered Commissioner Dudley’s proposal to form a five member pension commission with a lawyer doctor and pension agent to probe weak laws. Joan C. New resigns as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. Frederick Douglass, about seventy three, wed Miss Helen M. Pitts in Washington. his prior wife died last year. Congress hopeful on wool bill with two thirds needed. National Board of Trade Convention backed a National Board of Railroad Commissioners plus postal telegraph and telephone reforms.
The National Temperance Society urged national parties to nominate a President and Vice President who favor prohibiting liquor. Divers assessing the wrecked steamer City of Columbus found all works gone, no staterooms on deck, and heavy timbers blocking the hold. no bodies observed. In Petrolea, Pa., six year old sister was accidentally shot by Thomas Walley while handling a revolver, and the child is expected to die.

Not guilty verdict rendered by the jury in the Nutt case in Pittsburgh with the defendant remanded to await a mental condition review by a committee of physicians. If found sane he will be discharged. if insane he may be committed to an asylum. Congratulatory telegrams flow as crowds react.

Boston reports that fishermen allege the City of Columbus struck the Mussel Bed off the bridge rather than on the buoy, claiming shallow water and supporting Captain Wright’s account. Quartermaster McDonald testified Wright ordered south by west near Nobska light, while Wright says a later change to west-southwest was not carried out before Tarpaulin Cove.
A Cincinnati Northern Narrow Gauge passenger train en route from Cincinnati to Dayton derailed eight miles south of Dayton, with the locomotive and three coaches plunging twenty feet into a creek bed. Seventeen passengers were aboard. only two escaped serious injuries. Conductors and crew suffered injuries. several passengers were pulled from burning wreckage. Named injured include Joseph Enkenbauer, FP Schrader, Anton Wissman, John Huber, M H Morgan, with others from St John, Cincinnati and Lebanon, Ohio.
Wabasa Indiana January 22 A sensational report from attending physicians states an entire Heilman family is in critical condition from trichinosis after consuming raw pork for several weeks. Mrs Heilman and one child are said to be at death's door while the father and another child remain in danger.
Rochester, N Y observers outline five mounted observatories with permanent telescopes and gear. The Warner Observatory and the university facility are joined by Rev N M Mann's observatory behind his home, Major William Streeter's atop his house, and a residence adjacent observatory linked to William M Rebasz.
A historical note recalls Charles Dickens receiving a £1000 check from Holloway the pill maker to be used as a condition for a complimentary reference in his monthly serial. Dickens sent the check back with no reply, declining the offer.
