General Gladden Battles On Through Amputations
Brigadier General Gladden of South Carolina had his left arm shattered at Shiloh. He received a field amputation, continued to command from horseback, and refused relief. A second amputation near the shoulder followed. he died in the afternoon from lockjaw, after remaining at his post.
