Suicide of Captain Samuel Haverfield in Washington
Captain Samuel P. Haverfield, a Second Auditor clerk and native of Cadiz Ohio, shot himself on the 28th alt. He went to Washington in 1863 with the Lincoln Body Guards and later became a clerk at war’s end. The Rush and Captain Hooper are named for the Amethyst relief effort in Behring Straits with provisions and discretion to proceed north as drift allows. Postmaster General signs a money order exchange convention with the Leeward Islands set for January 1 1886. Resignations and Treasury notes follow including W B Gurley and calls for bond payments under Manning.
