Arthur Dodge recalls a summer in 1885 when railroad president Billy Thedford was forced to ride as fireman. Salem Illinois February. At 8 o clock Friday morning cashier B F Marshall found the vault door open and the safe shattered in the Salem National Bank. Authorities warned depositors not to fear and the bank planned to reopen. Estimates placed the loot near fifteen thousand dollars, with many believing it could exceed that amount. Police chased leads though no crew is yet caught.
In Council Burrs Iowa a grim discovery follows the killing of an elderly couple on a farm west of South Omaha. The couple died from a 44 caliber revolver and six horses nine cattle were stolen. A $10,000 reward is offered. Frank Offitt and Jerry Dee have been arrested on suspicion.
Denver police arrest Oscar Roberts age 23 and Arthur Butcher age 21 on conspiracy to kidnap ex Senator Tabor for a $50,000 ransom. Letter from Pincon New Mexico dated November 7, 1889 linked the plan. both men confessed but were released after Tabor declined prosecution due to their youth.
Fire engulfed Toronto University on Friday evening destroying the library worth 100000 and the museum. The blaze caused by a dropped lamp swept through the building after arrangements for 2000 guests. Loss estimated at 500000 with $164000 insured across twelve companies. The university opened in 1860.
A northbound Monon passenger train collided with a freight train two miles north of Mitchell at 10 am Friday. Victims include engineer W H Dillard fireman J B Godinger and mail agent Charles Wright of New Orleans. Six seriously hurt and others lightly injured. dispatcher error blamed. Injured transported to Mitchell.
