Young ladies receive white veil at St Nicholas Church
In Wilkes Barre on August 6 twenty novices including two from Germany received the white veil in a ceremony led by Rev Father Nagle with Rev Bishop O'Hara absent. A large crowd attended. Minnesota contributed four novices. Pennsylvania New York and Missouri one each. Following, eighteen others took the black veil with eight from Germany and the rest from Pennsylvania and Minnesota, aided by New York clergy.

Ohio appoints three to World Exposition in New Orleans

Gas Explosion Destroys Ferry House in Jersey City
An August 5 blast at the Pennsylvania ferry house in Jersey City caused by a leaky main destroyed five ferry slips and the main depot shed. Vigilantes Attack Horse Thieves Along Lake Utah
Fifteen to twenty vigilant men hailed the steamer Benton at Fort Hawley to seize provisions and continue tracking horse thieves. A two hour gun battle at Bateman's wood-yard left cabins and a house burned. several thieves escaped as the attackers killed or wounded others. The raid targets a gang along the river with intent to extinguish the threat and await supplies on the return trip.

Death Bed Confession Tells of Murder by Lead Pouring
In Goose Creek Township near Monroe North Carolina Mrs Francis Stegall aged seventy five confessed on her death bed to murdering her husband by pouring molten lead in his car thirty years ago. The husband died suddenly during a drunken spree and no foul play was suspected at the time. She made the confession to a clergyman and never remarried living a solitary life.

Lewis Peterson Sr., prominent Pittsburgh businessman and early daily newspaperman, died yesterday at age ninety three. He co owned the Pennsylvania Daily Advocate the city's first daily, helped form the Board of Trade and invested in iron. A Mason since 1812, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1813.
