News items report a major fire in San Francisco destroying nine buildings in the principal business district with losses of 175000 and insurance of 35000. Other items note escapes from jail in Arkansas, a purse theft at the Ebbit House, Cuban insurgent fighting, a train wreck suspect captured near Dayton, a roller skating endurance record, and bank figures.
Allentown pa April 10 1896 Democrats convene elect R Milton Speer as permanent chair and Randall garnering enthusiastic support for the presidential nomination. The platform denounces centralization and calls for tariff reform, honest state administration, and enforced civil law with Randall named as the party’s choice.
In Washington on April 10 the House considered a Haskins resolution charging that interstate railroad transport of live stock is barbarous and destructive. It asks the Commerce Committee to investigate losses, meat quality, and alleged bonuses to carriers, and to report remedies by law.
A special Grand Jury was impaneled in Cincinnati composed of leading business men. Most responded promptly. three claimed military exemptions but would not present them. The panel includes C. W. West, George W. McAlpin, Thomas G. Smith, Joseph Sater, Herman Goepper, A. S. Butterfield and other notable local businessmen. Instructions to be given next Monday as judges confer on Berner investigation.
In Junction City Kansas on Day Creek road Tim O Connor and his brother Mike were warned off district land. Tim was killed when Ernest Allen fired on them and Mike killed a Breen with an ax. The five assailants were jailed as the feud between Breens and O Connors erupts.
The second day of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association session reports no contagious diseases in Wyoming and neighboring states. The Territorial Veterinarian opposes rail cattle imports from Texas, endorses a pleuro-pneumonia bill, and forecasts beef shipments rising to about 200000 head for the coming summer. Chicago remains the likely main market as Union Pacific and Northern Pacific routes move the stock. Colorado range stock endured winter with losses but will boost shipments.

In Hazelhurst Mississippi Bob and Hans Penn killed R P Rials this morning after a prior holiday dispute when Rials shot Penn and left town. Rials who testified before the Copiah County Investigating Committee and supported Matthews for Sheriff was wounded multiple times including knife injuries and died from the assault.
On April 6 excursionists from Illinois Indiana and Iowa arrived at Pittsburg Landing aboard the John Gilbert and W F Nisbet to honor the Shiloh dead. Generals Wallace Smith and Dickey and other officers attended the ceremony at the National Cemetery. The crowd heard a Eulogistic oration by F D Smith and a Sp carot of Stonewall Jacksons words. The day ended with relic hunts among the fields and a campfire meal.
April 7 Lincoln Illinois. A mass meeting committee delivered resolutions demanding that Orrin A Carpenter leave Logan County. Carpenter refused to accept the paper stating he would decide his future course and denying authority of the committee. The scene caused excitement on the streets but no violence. Legal action against committee members rumored, continuation of a troubled case.
Wheeling report states pilot David Keeler was found guilty of manslaughter for the Scioto disaster of July 4 1882. Judge Jackson sentenced him to two years in the penitentiary and a $500 fine. Pilot Long of the Loman faced unrelated complicity charges and was released on bail. Keeler’s supporters seek a presidential pardon.
Cincinnati April 8 Sheriff Hawkins answers a company of veterans asking why they were summoned to the jail Saturday night amid a mob. He says the regiment was asked to explain disobedience to a lawful command from their Colonel. He blames a captain for faulty advice to police and resigns as Colonel.
Ottawa April 7 The grand jury in its presentment urged action on the Dunn murder case involving an American charged with killing circus man Fletcher two and a half years ago. They called it a disgrace that Dunn has remained jailed through five court sessions without trial. The judge announced the case will be tried at the current assizes.
