A force of men began sinking a shaft on the Credit lode on Tuesday though initial results are modest. Rich deposits found so far are not yet mineable due to market limits for quartz. Messrs Marks and Co. remain sanguine about a true fissure vein despite current uncertainties.

A Century of Mining and Metallurgy in the United States
A historical survey traces copper and lead mining from colonial beginnings in Connecticut and New Jersey to Lake Superior operations. It notes early charters in 1700, key mines at Schuyler and Belville, and the spread of mining activity across New England and the Midwest led by early explorers and engineers. The piece highlights the role of John Winthrop and Pere Le Sueur, with later developments in Lead mining in Missouri and other states, and mentions Mr. Cogswell continuing the Mine la Motte operation as among the oldest still active in the United States.
