Body of Keet baby found near Springfield well
The body of 14 month old Lloyd Keet, kidnapped May 30, was recovered Saturday morning from a well at the old Crenshaw mansion near Springfield. The child’s body lay wrapped in the blanket from the Keet home and an old black petticoat, floating two feet below ground. Suspect Piersol admitted visiting the Crenshaw place but denied involvement. Detectives, aided by Manny Simmons and Edward Conklin, broadened the search to the Crenshaw farm. The abduction triggered a major pursuit with a mob later trying to seize six prisoners in Stockton. Keet’s father endured a long, stormy midnight trek in a bid to recover the child after several ransom letters demanded payments totaling thousands of dollars. The case drew heavy local and federal attention as investigators pursued multiple alleged plots to abduct Clement and others. Lloyd Keet, brown-haired and brown-eyed, inspired ongoing hope that the child would be returned. The Greer County sheriff and authorities moved the suspects, but formal charges focused on plans to kidnap.
