Local items highlight crops, births, and town news
The Bates county column notes American Clothing House sales and July Fourth plans, farm insurance inquiries, dry weather harming strawberries, and local residents renewing subscriptions. It reports on legal notices, a courthouse sale, a late tragedy of Miss Cora Herrell, and prison and police updates in Butler and surrounding areas.
Fire destroys frame restaurant on North Main Street
A small frame building near the center of the block on the east side of North Main Street, owned by Fred Dorn and occupied by John Medley as a hand out restaurant, was almost destroyed by fire Monday night around two o clock. The blaze likely started from an exploding lamp. The structure stood in a one story room between two brick buildings. Firemen arrived promptly and the flames were checked with no damage to adjacent buildings. In the same report a disturbance on Wabnut Street near Third led to the arrest of Clay Lewis after he slapped a woman named Mrs. Vawter during a confrontation over indecent language. Lewis, a barber turned huckster, had various associations and was described as a backslider by Mrs. Vawter. He was jailed that night as part of the aftermath.
