A long list of Sunday dinners and visitors fills the town notes with names like Lee M Hardinger and Charley Croaswhite. Community events include Children’s Day at Mt Carmel, a family gathering at Ike Dawson’s, and various visits to Butler, Warrensburg, and Kansas City. Local farming, school news, road work, and a bank turnover near Nyhart are noted among numerous neighborly activities.
North New Home notes Mrs McCormic has been ill. There was no Sunday school at New Hope last Sunday due to Children’s day at Mt. Carmel.
J K Berry and family visited Mrs Berry's sister Mrs Bond on Tuesday. Walter Jones vacationed with sister Mrs Henry Ison. W O Atkeson family Prof Henderson and others fished Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Herman and young Marion joined funeral travel for aunt Mrs Vanse in Illinois. Mrs Ben Webster and Ruth Smith visited Mrs Chappell. McElroy and grandsons Arthur and Aubery Hoyle stayed with Wm Hardinger. 44 attended Carmel Sunday school despite some illness. Teachers'
A meeting and song service will be held at the school house on Wednesday evening starting at 7 45 Mrs Clos sen will lead the teachers meeting Guests included Mrs Frank Nance and daughters and Miss May Martin at Mrs Nances mothers home in Sunday. Various local visits and visits to Mt Carmel noted including Goodwin Allison and sister Louise Miss Margaret Wright Lela and Elsie Cain at Children Day exercises. George Herring unwell. W Newell and wife at Fred Wolf's home. Bessie Duran of Rich Hill visited Mrs Herring. Mr and Mrs Flannery from Virginia visited Critchfield. Mary Clark visiting Mrs Herring returned to Butler. Lyle and Walter Fisher visited Walter Jones.
Miss Grace Gerkin returned home from an extended visit with her sister Mrs. Howard Smith of Huntingburg Indiana. A rain shower refreshed dry ground while church members cleaned and carpeted the platform area. Cemetery decoration and a family birthday party for Fern Harper occurred despite rain. Local visits included Mrs. Leola Thomas London at the Thomas home and Mrs. Ida Booth Hall at her brother T J Booth’s. D T Rogers of Rich Hill visited Star area relatives.
A severe electric storm last Saturday caused a horse owned by the Nuckols Bros to be killed. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Requa welcomed a baby girl born Tuesday and both mother and child are reported to be well.
Memorial Day was observed in the city with a morning procession from the courthouse to the cemetery led by Tom Wainright. Veterans fired volleys over graves as flowers and flags were placed, followed by a Memorial address at Ohio Street M E Church by Rev. W H Rose in the afternoon.
Anderson Beckham aged 83 years and 2 months died at home two miles southeast of this city on Wednesday May 24 1011 after a long illness. A Tennessee native he lived in the county from an early age. He is survived by a widow two sons and one daughter. Funeral services by Rev W were held Thursday afternoon and burial followed in Elliott Cemetery.
The M. E. Church South lists Sunday school at 9 30 a m and preaching at 11 a m by Rev W G Beasley with a sacramental service after. Epworth league at 7 p m and preaching at 8 p m. Quarterly conference business session Monday 8 p m and prayer meeting Wednesday 8 p m. All invited. J A Jared P C
Jefferson City Missouri May 29 The annual State convention of County Superintendents of Schools began this afternoon and will run through Friday noon. About 100 delegates are present. A special excursion train will take visitors to the State University.
Washington May 28 The wool tariff comes before the full Democratic caucus Friday signaling the first major clash over the wool schedule revision. Leaders expect free wool sentiment to influence the vote while the Senate acts slowly on reciprocity and other measures. The House caucus will press for action if the Senate balks at extending the extra session.
The Standard Oil Company controls 74 percent of the nation's refining capacity with 22 refineries, each daily output 15 000 to 30 000 barrels. It maintains oil supplies at nearly 4 000 stations, holds 80 000 000 barrels in reserve, and needs 9 000 tank cars and 5 000 tank wagons for initial domestic distribution. Over half its refined products are shipped abroad by 200 vessels including 60 ocean tank steamers, generating more than 1 000 000 000 in foreign gold. The firm employs over 70 000 workers and has had no labor troubles in 40 years.
