The Butler High School Parent-Teachers Association will hold a special meeting in the school auditorium Monday at 10 30 a.m. Mrs Charles E Roe a National PTA officer will speak along with several state officers. Mrs Roe has conducted conferences at many colleges and universities in 19 states. All PTA members are urged to attend and hear the visiting speakers.

Lieut Epes Convicted of Wife Murder in South Carolina

Lieut S C Epes aged 27 was convicted of poisoning his wife by a South Carolina jury after a three hour deliberation. Life imprisonment is mandatory though mercy was recommended. The verdict was returned at 5 15 pm in a crowded courtroom with spectators mostly women. Defense counsel filed for a new trial and Judge A L Gaston scheduled a hearing for Monday.

Hon. U S Underwood representative in Georgia is reported much improved at Piedmont hospital Atlanta after surgery for multiple fractures in the right leg from a car crash near Butler. Friends statewide wish him a speedy recovery.

Georgia Press Association elects Belmont Dennis president

Atlanta September 23 The Georgia Press Association adjourned after Wright Bryan speaker and elected Belmont Dennis Covington publisher and civic leader president for the coming year. Marvin Griffin was chosen vice president with a 281/2 to 141/2 vote, in the 59th annual convention attended by about 200. Dennis succeeds R. E. L. Majors. McGinty kept as treasurer.

The Butler post office reports a historic shortage of stamped envelopes. Patrons are advised that supplies are exhausted due to a nationwide deficit, with the postmaster noting repeated orders for 60 days but no fills from the department. Nearby stores are selling envelopes with stamps to meet demand.

Reynolds Postoffice Adopts New Hours Next Week

Beginning October 1 the Reynolds post office shifts to second class hours with windows open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Sundays when no window service is offered. Mail for the night train is prepared at 6 p.m. each day and outgoing mail must be at the office by that time. On Sundays mail is placed in boxes and processed by 8 a.m. Mrs. Blanch Brunson P. M.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mattie L Adams Held Here

Funeral services were held at Butler Baptist church with Rev. W B Heats and Rev. J H Stanford officiating. Interment followed in the Baptist cemetery. Mrs Adams died Tuesday Sept 18 in Charlotte NC where she had lived recently. Born Oct 17 1859 in Cotton Hill AL she was the daughter of James T and Lucre tia Hamilton. She was twice married first to Lucius Layfield then to Rev J T Adams. Surviving are daughter Mrs J T Taylor of Charlotte and grandchildren Martha Hilton Sammy and Robyn Taylor of Charlotte and Kathryn Childres of Butler. Pallbearers were Mosley Hampton Childres J R Wilson Ed Wilson W H Trussell and T L Fountain.

The Columbus Baptist Association met at Antioch Baptist Church with Dr. Frank Dowell praising Columbus Roberts as a major benefactor of Christian education. Mercer University will dedicate the Roberts School of Christianity on Jan 14 1946, with Pat Neff slated to speak. Funds donated to the Hapeville orphanage and Temperance League contributions were reported amid adjournment after noon lunch.
