A mother writes to her son returning from war, urging self control and responsibility. She speaks of love, bravery, and the battles within, asking him to remember the mothers of others, to help peers come home clean and fine, and to stay true to American ideals. She offers to be a substitute mother to lacking peers and asks for his understanding and letters.
A fragment shows a mother scribbling at length, her impatience and care evident as she writes to her son. The text notes she has spent hours at the task, leaving the pen holder worn. The page hint directs turning to another page for continuation.
Butler friends of Col Theo J Mc Gee prominent Columbus attorney learn of his safe return from war torn Europe after months abroad. He recounts crossing the Atlantic avoiding German vessels and submarines with the American flag clearly displayed. Mines and a near capsize in heavy seas heightened the peril during the voyage.
Taylor County Ordinary L T Peed announced that the Georgia Department of Public Safety would erect speed limit signs along highways in the area soon. He had written to the department praising co operation with patrols and urging posted signs to prevent out of state travelers from being cited without knowledge of local limits.
Robert Mitchell Jr a 12 year old black youth and son of Sallie Mitchell was struck and killed Tuesday morning three miles south of Butler on state highway three. Driver H W Clark of Albany was exonerated after eye witnesses said the youth stepped into the road as a bus passed. The car struck the boy with its left front fender, he was taken to Montgomery hospital where he died shortly after arrival.
W. C. Brown a 42 year old Reynolds resident died Sunday at a Macon hospital from a shotgun wound inflicted at his Reynolds home Saturday night. A coroner's jury ruled death due to shotgun blast by unknown party or parties. Sheriff J M Bone held Charlie Harvey Love Dent and Howard Dent, all negroes, in connection with the crime. commitment trial set for this morning.
Ranger Ed Friend issues regional hunting rules for Taylor Peach Crawford and Macon counties. Licenses required for all hunters. Deer season November 15 to January 5. bear season November 30 to February 28. rabbits year round. squirrels October 1 to January 15. Wild turkey November 20 to March 1. opossum October 1 to February 28. quail November 2 to March 1. marsh hens September 1 to November 20. raccoon November 20 to February 28. Ducks geese and doves follow federal regulations.
The retail price of gasoline at all local stations advanced a half cent per gallon Tuesday while wholesale prices rose two cents per gallon Monday. The war scare is cited as a factor in the fuel and food cost pressures, but the exact timing of further increases remains uncertain.
The Rev. Richard C. Howard will resign as pastor of the Butler Baptist church next Sunday to accept a call to the pastorate of the First Baptist church at Hogansville. The move shifts leadership as Howard departs for Hogansville to lead a larger congregation.
Rev. Mr. Howard, pastor of Ellaville Baptist Church since 1936, has announced his resignation and will begin pastoral work at Hogansville Church on Sunday, October 1. He has served Ellaville for three years in connection with Butler Church, leaving many friends and supporters.
L M Doyer’s five year Butler store expands from small mercantile to one of Taylor county’s largest. Weekly staff rises from five to as many as fourteen on Saturdays as Doyel offers groceries feeds dry goods fresh meats hardware and 5 and 10 cent items. He says Butler ranks among Georgia’s best towns and last Saturday’s sales were the best in five years in the city.
Georgia Extension Service head J A Johnson visited the Herald on Tuesday in Athens for a conference with County Agent W F Bembry about Taylor county farmers. Details will be provided to the public over time. Johnson asked to be remembered to longtime Taylor county friends he could not see during his brief stay.
Col C L Shepard of St Valley will assist Rev J A Martin at Butler Methodist church in a revival starting next Monday. Two services daily 10 am and 7:30 pm through the week. Martin praises Shepard and urges prayer for guidance, revival of religion, reclaiming backsliders, and saving sinners.
The demurrer docket for the fall term at Taylor superior court was called yesterday and presided by Judge C I Mc Laughlin. Hamlet cases included Ron Cooper vs Rural Electrification Corp with Hugh Howell of Atlanta for the plaintiff and Harris Russell and Weaver of Macon for the defendant. Also demurrers to a damage suit against the A B and G railroad with G C Robinson of Montezuma and Lovejoy and Mayer of LaGrange. Several other matters aiding trial of civil docket for October term were disposed of.
Mr. Donald Peavy of Cuthbert accepted a barber post at the City Barber Shop here Monday, succeeding O. C. Keen who resigned Saturday to enter poultry business and plan a farm at McCants Mill four miles north of town. Peavy is described as an experienced barber highly recommended by Mr. Williamson.
Investigations by Sheriff J. M. Bone traced a Chrysler coupe found abandoned near Reynolds to a theft on August 27 from G. L. Edenfield of Albany. After proper identification, the sheriff returned the car to Edenfield.
Elizabeth Wynn Hart 65 died at her daughter’s home near Butler early Friday after a heart attack. Widow of J L Hart, she was born December 7 1878 in Micogee County, moved with her husband to Taylor County 26 years ago, and was a member of Butler Methodist Church. Funeral was held Saturday at the McCants residence with Rev W Hightower and Rev Ed A Martin officiating. burial in Mine Level Cemetery. Survivors include one son W G Hart of Columbus, one daughter C G McCants, three sisters and three grandchildren.
Hon J W Edwards returns home to Butler from Middle Georgia hospital Macon. He arrived with a professional nurse who has stayed at his bedside since a serious operation three weeks ago. As Taylor County representative in the General Assembly banker and real estate owner Edwards is highly esteemed. Many prayers and interest have followed his illness. friends report steady improvement and hope for a quick return to public life.
Palace Market owner Mr. T. E. Tante moved from Jarrell Department Store to the former Ruth's Beauty Salon building east of the public square. He runs a full meat and grocery line and operates a lunch stand serving sandwiches and light meals to school patrons.
