Georgia Plans to Cut Cotton Yield in 1984 85
Delegates from Georgia farmers and farm women at Westey Memorial Church in Atlanta on August 3 5 adopt a program to shift Georgia agriculture from cotton dominance toward self supporting farms. They call for county level campaigns under Extension Service and state authorities to reduce cotton acreage, boost food crops and livestock, and seek federal backing with financial and supervisory support through 1984 and 1985. They propose cash incentives for acreage reductions, tax measures, and continued credit to farmers willing to plant food and soil building crops.

Reducing Cotton Acreage in Taylor Discussed by Committee
The Taylor County Agricultural Board and the county agent met Tuesday evening to plan how to reduce 1934 cotton acreage. They could not finalize methods due to limited information from the Department of Agriculture, but issued definite recommendations for using land removed from cotton. One endorsed variety is Clevewilt cotton, wilt resistant and high yielding, with seed supplied by J. Carter. Local finisher J. T. Cochran is collecting Clevewilt seed and paying a premium for the cotton. About 10 tons of purple hull field peas were shipped to Cairo cannery by area farmers, with prices of 12.00 per ton fob fields for grown peas and 25.00 for snaps. growers should notify County Agent by Sept. 11.
