Hicks Execution Stayed by Court in Alabama
Columbus reports Rufus Mule Hicks, condemned for the murder of guard H J Walker during a 1930 escape, had his execution stayed as Judge C F McLaughlin granted a three week continuance for a new trial. Attorneys Battle and Lovvorn argued lack of time to prepare amended motion. Hearing postponed to Sept 19 to allow briefing and transcript completion. Hicks was convicted in Muscogee Superior Court on Aug 10 for the guard’s fatal head injury with an axe during the escape.
