Post War Prices and a Cotton Sale in 1865 Alabama
In September 1865 a father and son traveled to Eufaula Alabama with five bales of cotton. After the Civil War the father sold nothing during the war and stored crops to pay expenses. Georgetown offered 35 cents per pound, but James Mercer advised moving to Eufaula for 40 cents. A $5 per bale tax was due, lent by Mercer as $30. After selling, a barrel of leaf sugar cost $150 for 400 pounds and Java coffee 150 pounds cost $150. One and a half bales bought 41 cents per pound after expenses. He returned home and called his house man Patrick.
