22 FEMC Members Attend Anniversary Meeting in Atlanta

Twenty two Flint Electric Membership Corporation members joined more than 1250 guests in Atlanta for REA’s 20th anniversary banquet on May 11 at the University of Georgia gym. Speaker Sam Rayburn noted REA growth to 1000 cooperatives and 95 percent rural power coverage, with loan repayments ahead by 78.5 million dollars. The program included Emory Glee Club, a broadcast greeting from REA leaders, and a Roosevelt speech reenactment with Graham Jackson accompanying. Notables at the speaker’s table included Ellis Arnall and Congressman Prince Preston who introduced Rayburn.

Fort Valley Navy Man Recovered From Cave Pool

Navy lieutenant Murray Anderson of Fort Valley was found dead in a Radium Springs underwater cave near a guide rope after an all night search by four Charleston Navy divers. Anderson, 31, was a veteran skin diver with about 200 hours underwater experience.

Fowler to Receive Agriculture Degree at Berry Schools

Wm. Eu gene Fowler of Rupert will receive a B S degree in agriculture and husbandry at Berry Schools and College commencement on May 23. He has served as treasurer of the Agriculture Club and secretary and treasurer of the Poultry Science Club, plus leadership roles in the Georgian Literary Society YMCA and Livestock Judging Team.

Nazarene Church Honors Seniors Sunday Morning

The Butler Nazarene church will honor the local high school Senior Class at 11 o clock Sunday morning. Pastor J C Whitener will deliver the message with Rev E H Duan and Miss Margie Jarrell taking part. Senior class instructors and a group of named seniors will accompany the program and the public is invited.

Hartwell Editor Louie Morris Hartwell Dies at 61

Louie Morris Hartwell longtime editor publisher and civic leader for Hartwell Dam projects died May 10 after a heart attack at age 61. He planned to marry Grace Hailey May 19 and left a legacy as head of WKLY radio and publisher of the Hartwell Sun. Survived by two daughters and a Hartwell burial funeral held May 12.

McIntye Joins Wilson Grocery and Market in City

Macon native J. E. McIntye will join E. L. Wilson Grocery and Market this Friday. He previously worked as a promotion man in Armour & Company’s meat department. He is known in Butler for assisting during special sales. He comes with his wife and two small children and will reside in the Calhoun home.

Steinway Piano Dedicated Sunday at Baptist Church

The Baptist church auditorium was filled as the Steinway Grand Piano was dedicated to the Glory of God and in honor of Mrs. Julian W. Edwards who served as pianist and music director for 47 years. The event included remarks by Hon. Theo McGee and a formal presentation by E. J. Stinson, with music by Mrs. R. E. Jones and Miss Betty McCorkle.

Mercer Seniors to hear two Baptist educators in June

Mercer University plans its annual commencement June 5 and 6 with two prominent Baptist educators as speakers. Dr. G. L. Guffin, president of Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at First Baptist Church Macon and speak at Willingham Chapel for ministerial graduation. Dr. H. G. Davis, president of Howard College, will address graduates at the final commencement in Willingham Chapel, where about 200 degrees will be conferred.

Annual 4-H Talent Show Planned for Monday Night

Taylor County 4-H members will compete in a county wide talent show Monday at 8 p m in the local gym. Winners advance to the District Achievement meeting in Americas in July for district competition. Cash prizes to winners. Admission 25 cents for children and 35 cents for adults. Public invited.

Mrs W C Sanders Dies in Macon Native of Taylor

Information reached here that Mrs Wimberly Crawford Sanders of Macon died after several months illness. Formerly Miss Alice Byrd she was born in Taylor county and lived in Macon 50 years. Survived by son Wm H Sanders of Sumter S C and three sisters, among others. Funeral held at Hart's Mortuary Chapel with Dr Ernest Saloom officiating and burial in Riverside cemetery.

Georgia Law School hears Reynolds attorney speak

Hon. Garland Byrd of Reynolds addressed the University of Georgia Law School Phi Delta Phi luncheon. The speaker, an alumnus and judge advocate of the State Department of Defense, discussed how legal education aids many career paths and noted his roles with Sigma Chi and the Young Democrats of Georgia.

Former Butler Citizen Returns from Air Force Duties

Sgt. Arthur Blair, son of C. V. Blair and Mrs. Essie Blair, former Butler residents now in Macon, has returned from Air Force duty in Saudi Arabia. He and his wife and three year old daughter Valerie visited Washington DC New York City and Rhode Island before heading to Biggs Air Force Base Texas to resume duties.

Taunton Dies After Heart Ailment While Fishing

John Franklin Taunton died Monday night from a heart condition after a fishing trip near Horse Creek. His body was found by neighbors with his fishing rods and dogs nearby. He was born April 1 1886 and was a lifelong farmer and Mt Pisgah Baptist member. Funeral services were conducted at Mt Pisgah by Rev J H Stanford with burial in the nearby cemetery. He leaves a wife Rena Rosebud Bryan and children Ray Winston Taunton Hobs Hankerson Smith and several siblings.

Funeral Services Monday for Mrs Etta Carithers at Fort Valley

Mrs. Etta Wylie Carithers dies at her Fort Valley home after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at her residence with Rev. L. E. Houston Jr. and Rev. G. N. Rainey officiating. A native of Chester South Carolina she married Will H. Carithers of Butler before his death.
