Senior Class Day Observed at Methodist Church

A large audience attended the Senior Class Day program at the Methodist church at 11 a.m. Speaker Mr. P. Y. Luthre of Griffin addressed seniors and teachers after lunch in the church annex. Principal Hartwell Weaver Jr and others led the color ribbon ceremony. The Senior Class roster listed 40 students incl Bobby Akin Margie Jarrell Ernestine Davis and more. The group will visit the local Baptist church Sunday morning.

Taylor County H D Clubs Join in National Celebration This Week

Home Demonstration Week runs May 17 with activities by Taylor County 4H D Clubs Crowell Central Rupert and Mauk. Crowell displays club accomplishments in Reynolds store window. Central tours neighbors farm and home progress Tuesday afternoon. Rupert hosts all women Thursday honoring oldest and youngest members. Mauk hosts community covered dish supper Saturday night followed by a program featuring the winning essay Why I Am a Home Demonstration Club Member.

Annual Cancer Drive Under Way in Taylor County

The Taylor County fund raising drive to fight cancer is active with chairmen Mrs. Jack Suggs and Mrs. Lewis Adams of Butler. Reynolds District has raised 238.84 against a 180.00 quota, with Rosemary Whatley and Mrs. Louise Hinton recognized for leadership. Butler District has not yet met its quota. Last year Taylor County earned the Sword of Honor among 28 counties. The county chairman encourages another strong showing.

Irrigation Demonstration at Calvin Jarrell Dairy Farm

An irrigation demonstration is announced for Friday at 2 p.m. at Calvin Jarrell Dairy Farm on Highway 19 nine miles north of town. The event will showcase the Volume 1 Gun Irrigation method not yet demonstrated in the county with details available from Vernon Reddish, County Agent, or M P Dean of the Soil Conservation Service.

Peed Brothers Buy Cochran Estate Property in Butler

In Butler, Robert Cochran administrator of J. T. Cochran estate sold farm tracts totaling 17,300 and a one half undivided interest in business buildings including a service station and a large store on highway 19. Peed Brothers purchased all property for 24,600 at administrator’s sale. Col Dan S Beeland led the proceedings.

Installation Ceremony Here Recently for Stella Butler Chapter

Stella Butler Chapter No. 322 of the Order of the Eastern Star held its 1955 56 officers installation Sunday afternoon April 24 at the local Masonic Hall with about 150 guests from Albany Atlanta Americus Camilla Ellaville Ft Valley Griffin Thomaston Buena Vista and Marcon. Distinguished guests included R. M. Vandergriff and Mrs Susibel Collins Mrs Vera Hall and C. Collins. Installing officers were R. M. Vandergriff and several Grand Officers. Officers installed included Worthy Matron Cornelia Peed Worthy Patron Jack Peed Secretary Gene Benson Treasurer Bertha Bazemore Conductress Vivian Peed Associate Conductor Willa Deen Tante Chaplain Lonie Austin Marshal Marilyn Walker Organist and others. Crosley Cooking School at Community House May 5

The Crosley Corporation rep Hammack Electric Co will host a cooking school at the Community House on Thursday afternoon and evening May 5 at 2 30 and 8 00. Sponsored by the Eastern Star and Garden Club, the event features Crosley appliance demonstrations and dish preparation. Admission 25 and 50 cents. Everyone invited and prizes offered.

Ministers Conference on Soil Conservation at Mercer

Taylor County ministers joined by local soil conservationists attended Mercer University’s Ministers Conference on Soil Conservation. Dr. Louie Newton and Dr. Cecil Thompson spoke on Man's Responsibility for God's Earth. Attendees represented 35 counties across Piedmont Ocmulgee Towalgia and Central Georgia districts with Mercer hosting and a luncheon provided by district supervisors.

Butler elementary school presents If I Were Queen an operetta tomorrow evening at 8 30 in the local gym. First through sixth graders perform while seventh graders dance The Virginia Reel. Admission 50 cents for adults 25 cents for children with all proceeds for school benefits.

Roberta to Get New Eastern Sportswear Plant

A New Bedford Massachusetts firm Eastern Sportswear Mfg. Co. Inc. will set up a 27 000 square foot air conditioned plant on a ten acre Roberta site. Construction starts soon with 150 workers needed at opening and 300 when fully running in about two years. The Crawford County Development Corp. backs a 100 000 plant and a Roberta Mtg Co. will be formed with local participation.

Way of the Cross Pageant at Butler Baptist Church

The Mae Ingram Girls Auxiliary will present The Way of the Cross pageant during the 8 p.m. evening service Sunday in Butler Baptist Church. The Butler PTA announces a date change for its regular monthly meeting to Thursday May 19. New officers will be installed at the meeting and the third grade will present a program. All members are urged to attend and make it the best meeting of the year.

Mrs Annie Hobbs Dies After Short Illness at Sams Hospital

Annie G McDaniel Hobbs died at Sams hospital Reynolds on April 30 after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at Pine Level Baptist church with Rev S M York officiating. She was born August 18 1884 in Harris County, survived by her husband and three sons plus three sisters and one brother. Goddard Funeral Home of Reynolds handled arrangements.

Morgan County Band to Perform at Butler High Monday

The 60-piece Morgan County High School Band from Madison under Prof Williamson will give a concert at Butler High School gym Monday May 16 at 8 p m. Proceeds go to the Butler High School Band Fund. The group, rated among the best in the state, recently earned a superior at the State Musical Festival and participated in Atlanta's inaugural parade. The program lasts about an hour and includes classical top martial and comic selections. Butler High School Band will perform several numbers as well.

Crawford Co Man Burned Dead In Dudley Car

Rosberta man Jim Frank Mann aged 40 was found fatally burned in a car outside Jim Combs' home in Dudley. Coroner's inquest ruled death by smothering. 80 percent of his body covered by burns. Mann, an Robins Air Force Base employee, was survived by parents, two sisters, and a brother. funeral held at Providence Primitive Baptist church with burial in City Cemetery Roberta.

Rural Electrification Anniversary to honor Rayburn in Georgia

Speaker Sam Rayburn will address the 20th anniversary of the Rural Electrification Program in Atlanta on May 11. The event, at the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia, draws 1200 attendees from across Georgia and includes “Voices from the Past” featuring Roosevelt’s signature on the 1935 act. Governor Griffin proclaims May 14 as Rural Electrification Week.

Butler High School Band Delights Local Audience

Mr. Alex White, Butler High School band instructor from Macon, presented over 60 students Monday at 8 oclock. The school group, formed six weeks ago, drew strong local interest and will continue Monday and Thursday classes through July with fall sessions planned for September.
