Red Cross Membership Drive in Taylor County Nears Close

The Taylor County Red Cross War Fund drive under chairman Mr Thelmon Jarrell is progressing well but has not yet reached the $1,500 quota. The drive closes next Monday and all residents who have not contributed are urged to contact district chairmen or mail gifts to Mr Jarrell for an early check on progress.

Tifton Youth Loses Leg In Train Crossing Attempt

Willis Dixon 16 son of Mr and Mrs W G Dixon of Tifton lost a leg when he and Carlos Butler tried to cross a standing fast freight at the Tifton crossing Monday at 9 PM. Dixon, a paper carrier for the Macon Telegraph, was en route to Wilson Allen’s home for a paper sale checkup when the accident occurred. Butler, a collector, aided by calling an ambulance to move Dixon to a hospital where the leg was amputated above the knee.

Mercer University suspends law school during wartime

Mercer University in Macon announces the immediate suspension of its law school due to wartime student shortages. About four or five law students will study at other institutions while the college pauses activities, with plans to lift the suspension as soon as feasible.

Pace Bill Parity Measure Gets House Right Of Way

The House Rules Committee gave legislative right of way to the Pace parity bill to include all labor costs in farm parity prices. It passed the House by unanimous consent last fall and faces Senate reconsideration next week. Opponents warn of a price rise up to 15 percent. Pace predicts no more than 3 percent. Dr Johnson to Preach at Bethel Church This Weekend

Butler area highway foreman dies in timber accident

Mr Blan Garrett fifty maintenance foreman for the State Highway Department in Taylor county was fatally injured Wednesday morning near Butler while supervising loading of a pine timber onto a truck. He died at Montgomery hospital from a fractured skull. Surviving relatives include a son in the U S Navy and several siblings. Funeral arrangements pending arrival of his son.

Funeral Services For Mr. Horton At Crowell This Afternoon

Mr. Thomas Clarence Horton died Tuesday after being fatally injured at the Savannah Navy Shipyards. Born in Taylor county, he lived in Macon the past years and worked at the Savannah shipyards. Miss Laurette McInvale Commissioned Second Lt in Army Medical Corps

Miss Laurette McInvale daughter of Mrs. C. D. McInvale of Taylor county was sworn into the U S Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Medical Corps last Saturday. Ordinary J R Lunsford administered the oath at the local courthouse. She is a Butler High School graduate from the class of 1937 and a Grady Hospital nursing graduate. She will report for duty at Charleston D C next.
