Fire in Rupert School Extinguished with Little Damage
A fire at Rupert Junior High late Saturday night caused minimal damage. Jason Ellison noticed light in a dark building and alerted neighbors. Dlliston helped enter and extinguish flames in the fifth and sixth grade room, burning a hole in the floor and smoke on walls.

Escaped Convict Surrenders After Years on the Run
Taylor County warden reports L. N. Lewis a 28 year old white convict who escaped from the local Public Work Camp about a year ago came to the warden's home near the camp Tuesday night and gave himself up saying he was tired of eluding the law and wanted to finish serving his sentence. Helms noted Lewis was sentenced to 3 to 6 years in the penitentiary and had served all but a few months before his escape. He said the search for Lewis yielded no trace until the surrender, the first time an escaped convict willingly returned to him after many years on the run.

Athletic Club Enters Gold Medal Event in Montezuma
The Butler Athletic Club will join a Gold Medal Basketball tournament in Montezuma starting Monday March 6 and running through the week. Two games are scheduled each night except Thursday with three games. Participants include Ellaville Ft Valley Marshallville Bonaire Perry Montezuma Cordele Vienna Hawkinsville Pinehurst and Americus. Trophies await the top three teams and medals will be awarded to all teams and standout players.

Parvin Smith, 26, colored, jailed in Taylor county on a murder warrant for the December 26 death of his brother Judson Smith, 80. He signed a written confession stating he shot Judson during a quarrel over profits at Joiner Brothers in Butler after being promised a share. He claimed two masked men killed the brother and hired him to bury the body.

C E Benns of Butler former recording secretary and Ben H Hardy editor of the Barnesville News Gazette former treasurer of the Georgia Press Association were presented silver serving sets at the Georgia Press Institute in Athens. Benns was absent. Hardy accepted the gift as retiring treasurer. The presentation was by Kirk Sutlive and Otis A Brumby. The gifts stemmed from a resolution by W J Sutlive. Benns and Hardy served as secretary and treasurer for over 25 years and resigned at Swainsboro in September 1938.

Julian Possum Gill of Butler, son of Mr and Mrs A J Gill, turned amateur fighter and lost a tight decision to H K McCallum of Rome in the finals of the Southwestern Golden Gloves in Atlanta. Gill won one opponent Tuesday and two in Wednesday’s semifinal, and had ridden an 11 fight streak before the final. He competed in the 126 pound class and the Southwestern winners advance to the national tournament.
