Seventeen Years Ago This June in Butler County

Seventeen years ago this June, Sheriff J. C. McCunts of Butler County was fatally wounded in a gunfight with a group of men, while a clash with African American youths occurred on the outskirts of Putten. Auto fatalities, a large Atlanta fire, and wartime preparations dominated local news. The Butler community organized the Butler Van Guards militia for civil defense, with W. S. Steed as chairman and many locals enlisting. the county boasted a notable contribution of Confederate veterans. Page 8.

Americus Woman Flyer Praised For Bravery

Miss Mary Walker secretary of the Americus Chamber of Commerce received praise from aviators after a forced landing 16 miles from Tifton in a cotton patch during Georgia Air Tour. Pilot Seaman of Atlanta Joe Carter of Atlanta Willie Dunlap of Macon and Miss Walker aboard. The craft veered from Thomasville to McRae.

Dean Theatre Cashes In On New Film Releases

The Dean Theatre lists today and tomorrow showings featuring the Dionne Quintuplets in a 30 minute short paired with Max Miller's Cover the Waterfront. Sunday and Monday premiere a new musical The King and Chorus Girls with Fernand Gravet. Tuesday and Wednesday Grace Moore and Cary Grant star in When You're in Love, with a special 3 pm matinee Tuesday.

State officials laud county highway upkeep in Butler

Hon Chas N Elliott Director Division of State Parks and Hon Wm M Robinson Jr Chief Engineer Beautification toured Butler yesterday and praised the county's highway work under County Commissioners. They commended Patrolman G H Heath for maintaining the right of way, saying the highways surpass any other section of the state they visited.

Prominent Columbus Attorney to Resume Practice Soon

Robert M. Arnold, a well known Columbus attorney for 20 years, has returned from 15 months in Tallahassee to regain health. He has reopened his law office in suite 208 Murrah building, with offices described as splendidly furnished. Arnold represents major local clients including Central of Georgia and Southern railroads and previously served as vice president of the Columbus public schools board of trustees. Friends welcome his return as he resumes active law work in Columbus.

Columbus Firm Low Bidders On Road Job

The Campbell Contracting Company of Columbus bid 106,912.66 and appears the low bidder for paving 6.287 miles of unpaved Route 22 in Taylor County as bids opened in Atlanta on highway projects totaling over 1.75 million dollars. The state highway board also awarded a 12.6 mile paving contract in Talbot County as the only other unpaved gap on the Columbus Macon route, with another bid opening scheduled for July 2 to use the remaining Georgia federal highway funds.

Credit for first cotton bloom in Butler acknowledged

Credit for having exhibited in Butler from his fine crop of cotton the first cotton bloom of the season is due and hereby acknowledged on behalf of Mr. W. H. Joiner, one of the most industrious farmers of this section. Other crops besides his cotton are in a most flourishing condition, Mr. Joiner's neighbors report.

Extension Courses Offered To Teachers Of Taylor County

Thomaston Attorney Dies After Tack Injury

Thomas P. Stephens, 52, a Thomaston attorney, died in an Atlanta hospital from blood poisoning after stepping on a tack in Thomaston last November. Survived by wife Mattie Carswell of Adrian, two brothers E L and R J Stephens of Dublin, and three sisters Zimmie Bradshaw Wrightsville, Sallie Lamb Dublin, Eva Barnes Jefferson Fla. Injury led to infection. left leg amputated December 23, then worsening decline for months.

Ice cream supper to fund piano at Cross Roads school

Friday night at Cross Roads school building an ice cream supper will be held to raise funds for a piano for the school auditorium. A nearby lumber plant fire caused by sparks from a shaving pit threatened destruction of thousands of feet of lumber, but was quickly extinguished by the city fire department on a prompt three recent calls.

Fruit truck overturn injures driver in Georgia to Atlanta route

A large fruit and vegetable truck overturned early Sunday in North Butler injuring the driver. The vehicle was en route from South Georgia to Atlanta when the crash occurred, and authorities are investigating the cause.

Montezuma Man Hal Fisher Dies After Short Illness

Hal Fisher 68, native of Newnan, died Tuesday at Montezuma hospital after a brief illness. He leaves wife Janie Chastain Fisher, son Harry Fisher of Montezuma, daughter Mrs Irwin Stolz of Columbia SC, and stepfather to A A Marshall Macon County representative. Former Coweta Fertilizer executive, he organized Fisher Fertilizer Co in 1919, later managed Virginia Carolina Chemical and moved to Montezuma in 1932 to continue in fertilizer business. Funeral held in Montezuma at 10 am and body taken to Newnan cemetery for interment at 4 pm.

Columbus Baptist Association Wins State Training Union Award

The Columbus Baptist Association earned top recognition at a Georgia State Training Union service, sharing the honor with Atlanta in an event marking the 1987 award.
