Four linemen die after power line failure in heavy rain

Four linemen died near Pearson Georgia when a power line broke in a downpour sending about 2000 volts into soaked ground where they worked. Two other linemen escaped injury. The victims were O. A. Odum C. M. Brooker J. L. Liles Jr. and C. L. Brown all of Waycross. Georgia Power officials reported the line broke while workers were installing a pole.

Peach Packing Plants Open For Season In Taylor County

The Butler Jones packing plant near Butler shipped 200 bushels of Early Highly peaches last week. Additional shipments by Butler Jones totaled ten cars on Thursday and twenty on Monday, with New York market prices of 4000 and 3600 dollars per car respectively. Local growers include Butler and Jones, Walter Wainwright, T Whatley, T L Fountain, Mrs Williamson, Edwards Brothers, and Paul Brown oversees packing duties as U S government inspector.

New Equipment Added To Canning Plants at Butler and Reynolds

The Vocational Agriculture Department adds shelter for peas and beans and a tomato, peach, and apple peeler at the Butler and Reynolds plants. They canner add fruits and vegetables in glass jars and produce preserves. Schools may nominate a day weekly to can for lunchrooms under PTA sponsorship. contact Mr. E. G. McCants for details.

Medical School Diploma Awarded to One of Our County's Fine Students

Dr. Ben Giles of this city joined seventy eight graduates to receive the Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia on Monday evening in Augusta. He is a Butler High school alumnus and Mercer University BA 1946. He will intern at Macon hospital starting July 1. Attendees included multiple Giles family members from Butler Tampa York and Washington DC.

Friends report Elder S H Mc Corkle repeatedly ill with a lingering affliction. He was moved from Preston to an Atlanta hospital last week for treatment after several weeks of illness. He has led several Primitive Baptist churches in the area in recent years.

Mrs Gaultney dies after long illness in Montgomery hospital

Mrs. Tiney Amerson Gaultney widow of J T Gaultney died after years of illness at Montgomery hospital. Born May 9 1881 in Taylor County she lived there all her life. She was a Baptist and left five daughters and two sons. Funeral services were held at Midway church and cemetery with Rev J H Stanford and relatives assisting. Talbot County Sheriff Seizes Largest Georgia Liquor Haul

Georgia revenue officials report the biggest liquor seizure in state history. A trailer truck carrying 1,800 gallons of untaxed whiskey was captured on highway 80 in Talbot county between Talbotton and Halfway House, valued at $30,000. Drivers Harden Seat and Charles Combs were jailed. the liquor came from Blue Grass Liquor Store in Delta Virginia as part of a southern crackdown on illicit shipments.

Mrs J W Jenkins to Speak in June 22 Campaign Stop

Mrs J W Jenkins of Columbus in Taylor county will speak at the court house at 3 30 p m on June 22 to appeal for votes in her gubernatorial candidacy. Citizens are urged to attend and welcome the candidate as she criticizes the Talmadge faction and describes efforts to picket her meetings while she urges good government.

Methodist Pastor Changes In Butler Reynolds Dublin District

The South Georgia Annual Conference announces pastor changes across the county. Rev J W M Stipe leaves Butler after three and a half years for Soperton in the Dublin district. Rev C Wilbourne Hancock succeeds him and will move to the Butler parsonage by June 21 or 22. Rev D A Lastinger returns to Reynolds, with Rev W W Taylor moving from Darien to the charge. The Reynolds church notes Lastinger’s prior service and Midville’s praise for his ministry.
