Georgia Democratic Party Plans Fund Raising Dinner

The Georgia State Democratic Executive Committee, after selecting delegates to the National Democratic Convention, plans a $50 per plate fundraising dinner June 29 at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel in Atlanta. The committee also set primary filing deadlines and adopted rules to vote the Georgia delegation as a unit and to reconvene post convention to name presidential electors. Governor Griffin and Chairman Bell urged fair national party treatment for Southern states.

Gill Lauded for Lifelong Support of Tri County Junior League

In Bibb County the May 30 Democratic primary produced three runoffs to be held during the September state primary. Sheriff race incumbent J I Wood faces W L Robertson while County Commission Post 3 incumbent J W Denson meets Buckner F Melton and Post 5 pits C F Adams against Jimmy Bloodworth Bloodworth vows a return to campaign after a three day rest period and Adams predicts a Sept 12 victory. Adams notes he had 9300 votes in the initial race and Bloodworth, a newcomer, placed high in 1952.

Century-Old Bibb County Church Group To Erect New Building

Macon Georgia reports the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church, long based on Columbus road, is being torn down after tornado damage. The 1925 and 1954 twisters damaged the frame structure, which tilted and lost windows and ceiling. A new brick church will replace the old building. The church has existed at this site for about a century since its 1833 constitution.

Duncan Named Principal at Butler High for 1956 57

Jackson educator A B Duncan is chosen as principal of Butler High School for the 1956 57 term, succeeding Hartwell Weaver who moves to Winder Barrow High School in Winder Georgia. Duncan, 41, has 18 years in education, active in church and community groups, and plans to move to Butler in August. V T Medcalf named Butler High Band Director for the next school year, two days weekly, succeeding T N Brown. He brings nearly 40 years of band direction experience and operates a music shop in Thomaston.

Butler School Band to Play on City Square

The Butler School Band will give a concert on the courthouse lawn Saturday evening at 8. It will be the band’s last public appearance this school season. Citizens are urged to attend and enjoy the music and note the band’s progress over the past year.

Judge Fort Faces Challenge in September Primary

Columbus Enquirer reports 52 year old former City Court Solicitor J. B. Thompson will seek the Democratic nomination for the bench held by Judge Hicks Fort in the September 12 primary. Most observers expect Fort to retire after his term. Hubert Calhour seeks a second Superior Court judgeship on the Chattahoochee Circuit with no opposition yet. Circuit candidates must pay qualifying fees to both Muscogee and State committees, with Muscogee the only county in the circuit charging full fees.

Talbot Taylor Highways Bid on June 15 to Open

State Highway Board and Rural Roads Authority will open bids June 15 for road projects in 62 counties. Estimated cost totals about 9.1 million dollars with 2.9 million in highway projects and 6.2 million for Rural Roads Authority work. One contract covers 10.29 miles on Old Wire Road from SR 90 in Talbotton to the Taylor County line.

Prominent Oglethorpe Man Fatally Burned In Accident

Montezman May 30 M B Cheek 58 president of the Oglethorpe Lions Club died when a can of paint thinner in his car exploded causing a fire. Cpl G H Webb Perry State Patrol said Cheek either jumped or was thrown from the car after the thinner ignited. He was alone in the vehicle and on the board of stewards of the Oglethorpe Methodist Survivors include his wife several children and other relatives and friends.

Petition Dismissed Over Liquor Vote in Upson County

Superior Court Judge John McGehee dismissed a petition seeking to compel Upson County Ordinary Bethel Salter to call a wet-dry election. The filing by Buford Jones on behalf of the Legal Control Committee claimed 2741 signatures, while opponents argued 666 signatures should be removed, leaving 2662 valid.
