Worn out land becomes fertile pasture under Swearingen effort
About 500 acres near Reynolds transformed from eroded cropland to green pastures of fescue Bermuda clovers and small grain. R L Swearingen, aided by Soil Conservation Technician M P Dean, cleared gullies, fenced, fertilized, limed and top dressed with soda potash and acid. The farm now supports 225 head of cattle, 100 acres of oats clover and vetch, and plans continue with kudzu or sericea on steep ground and bulldozing 35 more acres for improved grazing.
