Prominent Local Couple Celebrate Their Golden Wedding Anniversary

Hon. and Mrs. R.S. Foy were honored at a dinner Sunday marking their Golden Wedding anniversary at the Foy home. The event was hosted by their daughter Mrs. W. L. Cannon with relatives aiding. Attendees included Col. C. W. Foy and many local friends from Butler Sylvester Atlanta and Reynolds. The couple have three children four grandchildren and long records of public service and farming.

Lunch, School Bills Lauded by Thompson

Governor Thompson praised Congress for last minute passage of three Georgia benefiting bills. He lauded school lunch program renewal Lanham funds extension for crowded areas and the Hill Burton rural hospital act while noting Georgia cannot meet its provisions. The Hill Burton act offers 50 percent local funding plus 25 percent grants from state and federal governments.

Reynolds Development Program Moves Forward in Community

Reynolds citizens back a growth plan with a new tennis court, outdoor grill, and expanded recreation facilities. The Industrial Committee will survey and launch Hinton Waters Company, a woodwork and hardware operation led by Woodfin Hinton and J. W. Waters. Orchids go to Reynolds Freezer-Locker for repainting and to Mr W G Neisler and Reynolds Methodist Church for a new Hammond electric organ installation.

Thomaston Boy Appointed Assistant Secretary of State

Horace Martin, standout student from R. E. Lee, was named assistant secretary of state for a week by Secretary Ben Fortson. He will begin duties Monday at the state capitol and assist Fortson in state business after being selected through Boy's State activities sponsored by Pete Thurston American Legion Post.

Pastor Attends Rural Life Conference in Lincoln

Rev. J. W. M. Stipe, pastor of Butler Methodist church, left Friday for Lincoln Nebraska to represent the Columbus district at the first National Rural Life Conference of the Methodist church. He said the gathering will propose policy and a program for the rural church. Eight study groups have prepared material to support the conference plans.

Barney Buys Colwell Motor Co in Butler

R E Barney purchased the Colwell Motor Company of Butler from J C Colwell of Thomaston and assumed possession immediately. Barney plans to run the business as Butler Motor Company at the present location with a service station parts and accessories department and full auto truck and tractor repair shop. Murry Driskell remains in charge of the repair shop.

Taylor County Schools Painted Interior and Farm Entries Shine

Taylor County schools including Peach Valley area were recently repainted interiorly improving light and comfort. Crowell school replaces plaster with celotex and rural restrooms receive modern flush toilets with inside lavatories and towels. Mrs. A E Guinn’s white Leghorn entries lead the Georgia National Egg Laying Contest in Athens with top and high placing records for the month and year. The Peach Valley Egg Farm, established by the late A E Guinn and Mrs Guinn, is noted for its stellar performance.

Funeral Services for Woodville B Amerson Held Today

Mr Woodville B Amerson 71 died at his home two miles west of Butler at ten yesterday morning after five weeks illness. Funeral services were held at Mt Olive Church Taylor Mill at 11 this morning conducted by Rev John M Cox with interment in Mt Olive cemetery. Survived by wife Lula Pierce Amerson four sons Ernest Paul Raymond John and daughter Dewey Parks. Edwards Brothers Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Preacher Rev J W M Stipe to Visit Butler Church

Rev J W M Stipe, from Lincoln Nebraska, attends the National Methodist Rural Life Conference and plans to occupy the Butler Methodist pulpit this Sunday. Revival at Howard Methodist begins August 4 ends August 10 with Rev W R Smith of Shellman preaching. Butler Methodists look to a church supper August 8 and the First Quarterly Conference for the Butler charge at Wesley on August 15.

Bill Brown Loses Large Barn in Early Monday Fire

A lightning strike during an electric storm destroyed a large barn and its feed stuffs and farm implements owned by Mr. Bill Brown near Howard. The total loss was about 1500 dollars for the barn and 1000 dollars for the contents.

Ellaville Tragedy: Mother and Son Drowned in Bathtub

In Ellaville Georgia a coroner's jury found murder and death by own action in the deaths of Mrs. Tom Brown and her four year old son Larry. Bodies were discovered Friday in the bathtub of their Ellaville home. A note requested the son be buried with his mother. The husband returned home and found the scene.

Hammond Electric Organ Installed at Reynolds Methodist Church

The Reynolds Methodist Church installed a new Hammond electric organ as a gift from Mr. W. G. Neisler. The organ was installed last Tuesday and will be used in a service for the first time next Sunday. Everyone is invited to worship at 11 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Revival Services Begin At Howard Church

Revival services will begin at the Howard Methodist church Monday night August 4 at 8 o clock and continue through Sunday August 10. Hinton Youth Killed Sunday In Accidental Shooting

The young Hinton resident was killed on Sunday in an accidental shooting by his cousin. In other news, the Butler Jaycees organized a fundraising drive at the Dean Hotel meeting to support underprivileged county children, planning a barbecue August 14 at Butler High School with J. F. Sikes coordinating ticket sales.

Harvey Kennedy Named To Flint Superior Court

Harvey Kennedy, Barnesville mayor and anti-Talmadge leader, accepts appointment as judge of the Flint circuit superior court. He will replace Judge Ogden Persons whose retirement is effective August 1. Announcement made by Phil Landrum, governor’s executive secretary. Kennedy rose to prominence opposing the white primary bill and Herman Talmadge, shaping state Democratic leadership.

Boy Killed in Accidental 22 Rifle Shooting Near Butler

James Lester Hinton thirteen died instantly when a .22 discharged while Bernard Joiner showed the weapon at the Joiner grandparents home three miles south of Butler. Eye witnesses said accident was unavoidable and no charges were filed. Funeral at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church with interment in Bethlehem Cemetery. Governor to Speak August 1 at Culloden Barbecue

Governor M. E. Thompson will address a large Culloden crowd on August 1 at the Daffodil Garden Club and Culloden Civic Club barbecue. The talk is set for 12 30 p m followed by the garden club serving a noted barbecue. The town of Culloden, once a regional learning center, hosts the event amid its long tradition of barbecues and local schools.
