Mrs Verna Griggs announces she will edit The Taylor County News and The Butler Herald succeeding Charles Benns Jr in a county paper serving over two decades. She invites letters Bouquets and Brickbats and promises weekly features plus pastor commentary and school lessons.
B W Smith died at Upson County Hospital Thomaston of a heart attack after about a week of illness. He was well known in Taylor County and brother in law to E H Bazemore and Riley Bazemore. Funeral services were held at Pasley Funeral Home in Thomaston on July 17.
Waycross will host two of the state’s finest trade schools soon. Preliminary plans for a Negro trade school are being drawn while plans for a white trade school have received board approval.
A $1.5 million damage suit was filed in Orange County against J. J. Bornstein and his law partner R. J. Bishop by Carl Pointer of Smyrna Developers. Pointer alleges the attorneys ruined the corporation’s credit and foreclosed the shopping center property, then transferred it to Leonard and Sarah Simons, Albert Morrell, and others. The center sits on nine and a half acres east and eleven acres west of U.S. 1 with 21 stores in the first section. seventeen are leased and the opening is near.
Georgia's 1961 traffic data show 54 084 accidents causing 1 017 deaths and 18 988 injuries, costing a $172.8 million economic loss. The report notes one accident every ten minutes and urges stronger enforcement to curb the toll.
Gov Vandiver announced an additional 760000 to finance state loans for tax equalization studies in ten Georgia counties Chattooga Jefferson Butts Floyd Clayton Upson Dougherty Chatham Taylor and Lamar. The total counties aided rises to 27 under the program begun last year.

Georgia State Medical Education Board approves 41 scholarships for 38 white and 3 Negro students for the 1962-63 year. Scholarships total 132 students statewide, each worth 1250 dollars annually. Recipients may repay by practicing in rural Georgia communities of 5,000 or fewer. as of July 1, 77 doctors aided by the board are practicing in Atlanta with more in smaller towns.
Georgia weekend deaths include eight traffic fatalities across the state and three drownings. Ed Cotton of Marietta died in a vehicle overturn near his home with his son injured. Wilbert Mincey of Manassas died from a head on crash. three more victims died in a wreck near Darien. Additional deaths include infant James Scowyer Jr in Emanuel County and Elza Campbell, Zollie Thorpe, Thomas Ward in separate incidents. a Fort Gaines man was struck on a highway. a Los Angeles assail? No.
Dr. Ed Wilson mayor of Macon and LT. Gov. candidate spoke at Reynolds Kiwanis luncheon. He urged cooperation with Georgia Tech and Georgia to expand markets for farmers, argued for balanced growth between agriculture and industry, and emphasized improving education and school size to benefit statewide children. Garland Byrd birthday party plans in Reynolds were announced for August 9 with guest C. L. Lawrence of Curry, North Carolina.
Local Woodmen of World Camps hold a joint session at the Masonic Hall tonight. Slides and films from the Cochram Georgia encampment will be shown with Paul Jones, State Manager of Middle Georgia, present to introduce them. Program starts at 8 p.m. Everyone is invited.
Cinderella Foods of Dawson Georgia has won a 15th consecutive year contract with the U S Department of Agriculture to supply nearly seven million pounds of peanut butter for U S school lunch rooms The deal is valued around 500 000 and production runs August 6 through September 11 on a six day per week around the clock schedule.
Eight 4 H ers attended the District Project Achievement Meeting in Americus last Friday. Claire Elliston won first in Entomology and Lucy Jon Mangham won first in Recreation Demonstration. The Upson County Temperance League plans to petition for a July 28 election on wine sales in Thomaston Georgia. Officials stress no beer measure will be considered as wine and beer laws remain separate. Local citizens requested the move.

Mercer University president Dr. Rufus Harris said the 120 year old school had one or two Negro applications this year, none qualified, and he personally supports admitting Negro students. His stance surprised Macon and Baptists who recalled earlier denials of any applications.
Georgia gains nearly 5 million in military construction funds under House action sent to President Kennedy. The statewide total is part of a 1.4 billion national authorization. Fort Benning gets 3.7 million for facilities and housing. Ft Stewart receives 231 thousand. Robins AFB 389 thousand. Turner Base 394 thousand.
