A new multi million dollar hospital in Macon serves Middle Georgia with modern care. The event is celebrated with community notices, church announcements, and a poem by Frank L. Stanton, honoring local figures and recalling civic gratitude.
The College of Agriculture Extension Service plans the 13th annual Farm Safety Week in Georgia with G I Johnson noting over 14 000 farm deaths yearly. The campaign promotes year round farm and home accident prevention under national and state sponsorship by the National Safety Council and the U S Department of Agriculture.
Revival services are in progress this week at Mt. Pisgah Baptist church four miles southeast of town. Hours are 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Rev Worth Huckabee of Valley Grove Baptist Church Thomaston conducts the services. The revival closes Sunday with a Home-Coming service and noon dinner on the church grounds. Everyone is invited to attend.
Thomaston Production Credit Association stockholders will gather for the 23rd annual session on August 2 at 10 30 a m in the Upson county courthouse. Directors listed include W J McDaniel Zebulon J E Ballard Sr Barnesville J J Pierson Culloden Franklin McCants Butler and L A Hancock Thomaston. The association serves Lamar Monroe Pike Taylor and Upson counties with agricultural loans and is locally owned by its farmers.
Taylor County educators W. H. Elliston superintendent of Taylor County Schools and E. H. Joiner Reynolds High School principal are among 16 Georgians receiving fellowships to the Seminar in Human Relations at Mercer University Macon co sponsored by the Georgia organizations of the National Conference of Christians and Jews beginning July 26.
Georgia senators and two congressmen press to name a U.S. Navy vessel in honor of Upson County or the late Ens. Fred Mallory USN. The idea emerged in a letter to Sens. George and Russell and Rep. Flynt Jr. Flynt sought support from Rep. Vinson.
The first Sunday in August is announced as Home Coming Day at New Prospect Church. There will be good singing and dinner served on the grounds at noon. A cordial invitation is extended to all to attend and enjoy the day in the service of the Lord.
Macon unveils a seven building, seven story hospital on Hemlock street with 517 beds planned, featuring emergency rooms and operating suites, laboratories, X ray, obstetrics on the third floor, pediatrics on the fourth, and a large ward and private pavilions. The city owns the center with an investment around five million dollars funded by taxpayers.
A man known as J. C. Christopher alias Bill Bailey faced Recorder's Court and was ordered to pay a $52 fine or serve 52 days after pleading innocent to soliciting advertisements for a non circulating magazine. Judge Frank Girrard Jr presided.
A storm hit Fitzgerald when lightning struck a pecan tree killing Florita Freeman Rogers 52 who was under the tree. The mother of 13 died instantly and survivors include husband J C Rogers four sons nine daughters and three brothers.
Horeb Baptist Church will start its revival Sunday morning with a home coming day. Dinner will be served on the church grounds at noon. Everyone is invited to worship and attend the revival through its remaining days led by Pastor H. E. Whitley.
Garland T. Byrd of Butler has been named director of agricultural activities for the 1956 Democratic presidential campaign by DNC Chairman Paul Butler. A Georgia Young Democrats leader since 1946 and a practicing attorney, Byrd will represent Georgia farmers in seeking a fair farm program amid rising costs and declining incomes.
Atlanta July 21 The per capita cost of operating Georgia state government rose about 400 percent in 14 years. For the year ended June 30 state spending equaled 81 79 per person, up from 15 79 in 1942. Auditor B E Thrasher Jr released the annual financial summary showing major increases from 1942 to 1952.
Miss Clara Davis, daughter of Mr and Mrs W E Davis of Sylvester, wore a white gown and was crowned queen of the Tifton Junior Woman's Club 18th Annual Tobacco Charity Ball. Charlie Spivack orchestra led the event, which precedes this year’s tobacco market opening on July 25, after a downtown parade themed Tobacco Time Is Holiday Time.
Little Bethel Freewill Baptist Church near Ideal announces a revival starting on the Fifth Sunday of this month and continuing until August 5. Visiting minister Rev. Bruce Clenney of Colquitt will headline with Rev. Tom Holliman of Phenix City serving as pastor. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
The State Board of Education voted to resume life certificates for teachers in Georgia. Under the Minimum Foundation Program retired and renewing requirements end, with five years of classroom success and a bachelor degree or equivalent for new holders, plus superintendent recommendation.
Senator George of Georgia plans to leave for Europe August 31 to meet NATO officials and prepare for duties as a presidential representative to the North Atlantic community. He will be accompanied by Mrs. George with stops in London and Paris before Vienna rest and a Georgia return.
Warner Robins minister Rev C W Ray 38 jailed for speeding and released on 25 cash bond after testimony showed his daughter and three other girls waited in the car outside the jail. Rev Clarence Busby of Doraville also jailed on interfering with an officer duties charge before posting bonds.
Clifton B. Byrd Jr. has been selected as one of three U.S. men for a special Red Cross mission in Europe. He sailed July 23 for Stuttgart Germany, the American Red Cross in Europe headquarters, and will tour Europe and Africa during the assignment.
Talbot County neighbors are invited to Evans Chapel Methodist Church for a homecoming on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Rev. Aubrey Alsobrook of Claxton will deliver the message. A lunch on the church grounds follows. Evans Chapel marks a century of spiritual history with a Centennial observance held in 1952.
Plans to raise 200000 for improvements and expansion at the Georgia FFA and FHA Camp near Covington were announced by W R Bowdoin at the annual vocational agriculture teachers conference. The campaign starts in November. The camp opened in 1937 and serves about 5000 teenagers each summer.
Thomas F. Mathews announces he is closing his daily and Sunday newspaper agency serving The Atlanta Journal The Atlanta Constitution Macon Telegraph News and the Columbus Ledger Enquirer. He thanks subscribers for patience and kindness and notes the Saturday closure of his agency.
The Reynolds Canning plant will operate two days each week until further notice. Hours are Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for receiving products.
