Chicago Gangland Shooting Shocks Phenix City Couple

Sheriff reports Hoyt Shepherd cafe operator and a woman companion shot while driving on Phenix City Station highway. Shepherd in serious condition with three to four wounds, companion wounded once. Details remain unclear as they were brought to Columbus for treatment. Local authorities said the incident followed a gang style ambush late Tuesday night.

Let Supreme Court Settle Negro Vote Case

Gov. Thompson urged the U S Supreme Court to resolve the Negro voting issue before the 1948 primaries. He commented after learning a Federal Court ruling allowed Negroes to vote in a South Carolina test case, warning the decision could affect Georgia. Thompson spoke in Salt Lake City at the Governors Conference.

Postmasters Schedule Georgia Convention in Atlanta

The Georgia Branch National League of District Postmasters plans its yearly convention July 23-24 at the Henry Grady Hotel in Atlanta. More than 900 postmasters receive mailed programs listing speakers including Gov. M. E. Thompson and Deputy Postmaster General Roy North. The event includes a Governors Mansion visit and a banquet, with expected high attendance.

Columbus July 14 Rev L O Peck told a Beallwood Church of God congregation that flying saucers seen nationwide mark the end of the current age. He cited Acts 2 19 and Joel to forecast a coming world war and a Battle of Armageddon involving Russians Germans Americans and the British ensuring the Lord protects Palestine.

Quitman County Sheriff Injured in Fatal Gun Battle

Georgeton Georgia July 14 Sheriff H F Herrington 64 said he killed Ball Smith 65 after Smith cursed him and threatened to block the arrest of his son T D Smith 17 during a gun battle with a group of Negroes who fired on the sheriff escaping after beating him and injuring a rib. The sheriff was slightly wounded when his gun was knocked from his hand and a bullet grazed his head.

Youth Caravan at Methodist Church Next Week

Death of W C C Joiner Former Butler Citizen

Mr. W. C. C. Joiner aged 78 a former Butler citizen dies at his Florida home in Marianna following a brief illness. Last rites were held July 9 with services at Shipley and Collins Chapel after a death July 8. Interment in Collins church cemetery. Survived by widow two daughters and five sons and a sister. He was a prominent builder who retired four years ago.

Mrs. Ruth Clark becomes full time secretary for the State Department Veterans Service in the court house office formerly used by the draft board. The office hours are 8 30 a m to 4 30 p m weekdays and 12 noon Saturdays. World War II veterans should file for Terminal Leave Bonds before Sept 1 and those with service connected disabilities are urged to file claims promptly.

Three University of Georgia Law School students from Georgia sign a statement urging South Carolina to persist with legal challenges to the U S Court ruling nullifying the white primary. Mrs Anna Wilchar Dies Here After Long Illness

Mrs Anna E Wilchar 96 of Butler died Friday July 11 after years of illness. Born January 19 1861 in Taylor County she was married to Frank Wilbar who died 44 years ago. She held long memberships in Butler Methodist church and Eastern Star. Funeral Saturday at four with burial in Corbitt Cemetery. Survivors: two sons H L Wilchar Butler and B S Wilchar Manchester two daughters many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
