Army engineers at Mobile Alabama awarded a $112 311 flood protection contract to Columbus Construction Company to build a compacted earth levee with drainage facilities pumping station discharge pipes access bridges head gates and related works at Montezuma. Work starts this month under district engineer Col H E Bisbort and Mayor A C Felton II.
Mr and Mrs E J Stinson of Butler were summoned to Grand View Mo Friday for the death of Mr Co B Stinson at age 42 after a short illness He died at his Grand View home Thursday night Funeral services were held there Saturday He leaves a wife two children and two grandchildren and four brothers Ralph in California F C and Grady in Waverly Hall and E J Stinson of Butler
Funeral services for Mrs. Pernoke Dell Carpenter 38 were held Wednesday at Bethlehem Church with Rev. W. M. Cross officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Cemetery. She died at her home near Butler after a brief illness. Born in Tallahassee Florida on June 15 1918 she was daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Amdrew Brooks. Pallbearers included Buddy Harris Albert Harris Zebe Harris Ralph Barrow Ambrey Allbritton and George Hurt. Survivors listed: her husband M C Carpenter two sisters and two brothers. Edwards Funeral Home directed arrangements.
Washington July 5 The House rejected final passage 224 to 194 after a day of sharp dispute over a segregation amendment to a school aid bill. The measure would have barred states practicing school segregation from receiving funds from a proposed 1.6 billion construction program.
Former deputy F. D. Chappell has been elected to fill the unexpired term of the late Sheriff Jack McArthur in Sumter County. He ran unopposed in the special election. Olin Culpepper, a Sumter merchant, challenges him for the regular term starting Jan 1, 1957, with the race to be decided Sept 12 at the State Democratic Primary.
The revival at Mauk Methodist Church starts Sunday and runs through Friday night July 20. Evening services at 8 o'clock feature pastor Rev. Ernest Coffee. A Bible School gathers at 2 p.m. daily that week inviting all children and the entire community.
Revival services begin on the Fourth Sunday July 22 at Mt Pisgah Church and Home Coming Day follows on the Fifth Sunday July 29. The public is cordially invited to attend each service.
Congressman E L Forrester argues in the July issue of Facts Forum that the Declaration of Constitutional Principles known as The Southern Manifesto defends constitutional rights. He cites Jefferson Mason Washington and the framers and warns against tyranny from centralized power. He defends amendments and opposes judicial overreach and changing times.
Historic Warm Spring Camp Ground hosts the Sixth Annual Homecoming of Trinity Church of Duval on Sunday. Rev. Eugene Dunn will lead morning worship and a barbecue is served at 1 p.m. The camp was dedicated in 1832 and the church formed in 1954, with charter members listed as Tiger, Martin, McGehee, Clements, Crowder, Mitcham, Parkham, Key, Stinson, Barnes and Jenkins.
Griffin July 5 Robert G Swint 66 a past president of the National Cotton Ginners Association and a longtime state politician drowned early Friday after rescuing his wife who had fallen from a small boat He owned Swint Seed and Gin Co at Orchard Hills and served in the State House of Representatives and as a state senator in 1949 50 He was a member of the Spalding County Board of Education and the Griffin Spalding County Hospital Authority.

Citing Wolfe v Colorado and the school cases, the text condemns interpreting the 14th Amendment by present mood rather than original intent. It laments architects of the Constitution and Jeffersonian founders weighed as dreamers would warn against shifting language.
Mr Wilson Jarrell and family move from Perry to Butler to establish Byrd Jarrell Gin and Warehouse with partners Garland and Thomas Byrd. Jarrell, former Jarrell's Department Store manager, will lead the new business serving local farmers. He returns to the county after 15 years at Warner Robins as a transportation officer.
State Patrol reports a headon collision near Macon on Monday afternoon in heavy rain killed Velma Ellison 26 of Warner Robins Bobby Glasco 19 and his mother Annie Glasco Forsyth all identified by authorities Otis Glasco 46 in critical condition was the other driver and treated at a Macon hospital Ellison was the sole occupant of one car and Otis Glasco drove the other vehicle
Home Coming Day to be observed at Trinity Freewill Baptist Church on Sunday July 22 with Rev. W. J. Childree preaching. The event continues through the following Friday night inviting singers and the public to attend.
Crowell Methodist Church begins a revival this Sunday led by guest minister Rev. Edward Reeves of Reidsville with preaching at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Rev. Chas. L. Hillis conducts Sunday services and Reeves arrives Monday to lead for the rest of the week.
Crowell Church hosts Family Night Friday July 13 with a special speaker and Bro. Charles Hillis on the program. The event centers on community fellowship and a supper to follow the evening talks.
Beginning this week the County Extension Agent's Office will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday Monday through Friday.
