A five year old boy, Bobby Axom, died Monday when a house near Jeffersonville burned. Six other children were rescued by their father, Essex Axom, a 47 year old saw mill worker, and by his 14 year old son. The fire destroyed the home owned by Mayor Califf and authorities say the incident is under investigation.
A Birmingham death report details Claude McCullough’s fatal injuries from an unknown assailant on July 1. Detectives say the attack began outside a room with two men striking and kicking him, then vandalizing a cafe door. Funeral was at Elmwood Cemetery with Rev. James Camtrell. Survived by wife Mattie S McCullough, son Claude McCullough Jr, granddaughter, and two sisters Mrs E B Shee of Rupert Ga and Mrs R C Scott of Orlando Fla.
Mr J S Green Jr and family moved to Butler to join his father in the Naval Stores business on the Butler Mauk highway near the old facility. The family includes Cathy and Johnny. Green, a University of Georgia graduate and former Navy lieutenant, recently left active duty July 1 after a 50 year career, with service from boot camp in San Diego to assignments in Norman, Memphis, Newport, Yorktown cruise to the Far East in 1954, and a Pensacola discharge in 1955.
A Fourth of July gathering for former Governor Ed Rivers featured participants who said the con clave had no political significance. One attendee reported receiving encouragement for his own political ambitions, while Rep. Downing Musgrove of Homerville said he was urged to run for lieutenant governor at the Lakeland barbecue and celebration.
The Bethel Primitive Baptist church near Butler hosts a three day July Meet starting Friday with 11 am services each day and night sessions Friday and Saturday. Expected ministers include Eld M A Hall Arabi Eld Joe Burch Arabi Eld W A Hartley Cordele and Eld Bentley Adams Thomaston. A basket lunch is served at noon Sunday.
City of Butler Georgia warns funds exhausted and urges residents to pay city taxes immediately. Taxes tabulated and ready for payment with a 2 percent discount to save interest on borrowing. Mayor and Council request prompt compliance.
Trinity Freewill Baptist Church will observe Home Coming Day on the Fourth Sunday in July. A day of special singing with quartets trios and solos is planned. Everyone is welcome to attend and share in the good day in the Lord. Lunch will be served at noon.
More than 300 Taylor county residents attended the Reynolds Golf Course celebration. Buddy Dunn led the musical program while Carlotta Pye won Bathing Beauty first prize. Louella Maddox and Angela Hunt placed second and third. Proceeds benefited Butler and Reynolds pool funds.
Gov. Marvin Griffin named 66 year old Sumter County Commission Chairman Gev Mathews of Americus to the state highway board to fill the vacancy from Roger Lawson's resignation. Mathews, former president of the Georgia Association of County Commissioners, will serve the remainder of Lawson's term to Feb 8 1960 and will be sworn in to the $11,400 a year post.
Miss Nellie Stanford 74, sister of the late Rev J H Stanford, died at Vidalia Monday. Born in Harris County, daughter of E J and Lula Harrison Stanford, she taught speech in several schools and locally in 1910 1912. Funeral at Antioch Baptist Church near Butler Thursday 11 a.m. Rev E H Dunn officiated. Interment in Antioch cemetery.
Safety experts report a high toll of traffic deaths over the Fourth of July weekend and urge continued efforts to reduce highway accidents. They blame speed for many crashes and call for persistent enforcement and public awareness beyond the holiday period.
A Macon man F. B. McNabb age 31 and his wife died after their Piper Tri-Pacer hit a power line and crashed in a Twiggs County corn field Sunday shortly after takeoff from Herbert Smart Airport. Two others, Joseph Carroll and his 11 year old son, were injured. The victims were connected to Macon Paper Co. and the crash occurred seven miles from Bullards community.
Sheriff L R O Neal of Crawford County remains in serious condition at Macon hospital after a heart attack at his home on July Fourth. He has served twenty years as sheriff and reportedly suffered a stroke. relatives say he collapsed returning home around noon after working Thursday morning. Visitors restricted as condition is monitored.
The Georgia Holiness Camp Ground seven miles north of town hosts interdenominational services through next Sunday. Evangelists Rev. A. I. Wise and Dr. Harry W. Blackburn lead, with Don and Jean Rollings as youth workers and singers. Camp President Rev. M. Wood presides. daily sessions include Bible Study 9:30 a.m. and services at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 8 p.m.. children’s service 3 p.m. and youth meeting 7 p.m. each day.
Dorothy W. Gray chief clerk and Roy F. Jones county office manager received U. S. Department of Agriculture length of service awards from H. A. Sealy at a July ceremony in the Taylor County ASC office. The awards recognize ASC staff with 15 years or more service, supported by the ASC State Committee chaired by J. L. Morgan of Waynesboro.
Ted Griner, Pastor invites attendance at 10 A M Sunday School and 11 A M Morning Worship with a sermon "The Sheep Who Lost Himself" first in a series. 7:15 P M Methodist Youth Fellowship and 8 P M Evening Worship with sermon "Footprints of Jesus." Attend Sunday night services.
