Mr C C Robertson named Taylor County Warden and Road Superintendent effective Feb 1. He replaces J B McManus who held the post two years and resigns to take similar work in Upson County. McManus thanks the Board and public as Upson County reopens its Public Works Camp.
Former Georgia governor John M. Slaton died January 11 in Atlanta. His will filed for probate leaves about 300000 to relatives. Executor John Slaton Jr. names Martha Lee Slaton sister to receive 5000 a year for life and 5000 outright. Sister Mrs E G Hitt gets 3000. Other family members receive amounts between 5000 and 25000. His law library goes to the University of Georgia.
The Taylor County ASC Committee sets closing dates for cotton and peanut programs. Cotton allotments include filing requests for additional acreage by March 1 and February 15 for new grower allotments, with a March 1 release of 1955 allotments. Peanut allotments require March 1 for additional acreage and the 1955 release, and January 31 for new grower allotments, plus February 15 for premeasuring cotton acreage costs.

Talbotton January 15 Mr and Mrs J B Miller marked their sixty fourth wedding anniversary January 11 at the old Marshall place where they wed Mr Miller formerly farmed near Woodland before retiring several years ago.
Herman Talmadge of Lovejoy took the oath to practice law in the U S District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Federal Judge F A Hooper administered the oath at the start of morning court sessions and welcomed the former Georgia governor.
Mercer University dates a new dean Dr. Malcolm Lester in Macon as the 122nd founding anniversary nears. He will assume the post in August succeeding Dr. Hoy Taylor. Georgia Highway Board Chairman Jas L Gillis resigns after backing the wrong gubernatorial candidate. Walter Blassingame is named to succeed Gillis amid reorganization discussions.
In Atlanta on January 12, Governor Marvin Griffin administered the oath to sixteen officials. Among them were Atty. Gen. Eugene Cook, Treasurer Geo. Hamilton, Sec. of State Ben W. Fortson Jr., School Supt. M. D. Collins, Comptroller Zack Cravey, and others. Labor Commissioner Ben Husett was absent due to illness. several appointees and reappointments received oaths at the event.
Cordele Georgia January 16 the body of Geo E Thombley 22 a Vienna airman was found on the old Drayton Road near Cordele Sunday morning by farmer K A Sheffield. Cries county sheriff and GBI conduct an intensive investigation with broken glass and a car bumper found at the scene, suggesting an automobile accident though no vehicle is located.
Two armed bandits shot a man and woman at River View Tavern on Honkytonk Row in Upson County and escaped with 189 dollars toward Columbus. Mrs Clarice Pippins and bystander Tom Smith were hospitalized with gunshot injuries. police hunted two young white men, leather jacket and dun garments. The River View had been ordered padlocked earlier after a Columbus Ledger probe into local vice.
Ft Valley officials report four Peach County residents are undergoing treatment for possible rabies after exposure to a pet dog. M Graham Jr. of the county health office identified the Greene family, including Ruby, and Mrs. Mary Jackson as the patients. The dog reportedly had the dumb form of the disease, which can cause choking and requires caution in handling.
The Butler basketball team ends four years without defeating Buena Vista by winning 57 47 in January. Bob Aiken 21 points leads the boys, Purvis and Davis add 11 each. Girls fall 43 27 as Margie Jarrell tops with 14. Next home game January 21 vs Georgia Southwestern B.
Mrs Elizabeth Mark Rogers aged 85 died Thursday in Americas Sumter county hospital after a lingering illness. Born February 4 1868 near Thomaston she moved to Butler and later to Mauk before marrying D Rogers of Marion county. Survived by a son J M Rogers four grandchildren two nieces and two nephews. Funeral services were held Friday at the Ramah Primitive Baptist church in Buena Vista with Rev R H Jennings officiating. Pallbearers named Stevens Brady Belk Dillard Brown Greene Hart.
Baby Kim Alan Massey ten months old son of Mr and Mrs Jack Massey of Bainbridge died at a hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were at the Ideal Baptist church with Rev Jerry Partain and Rev Henry Thomas officiating. Pallbearers were C D Price Wm S Angle Thomas Harper and Troy Litchworth. Survivors include his parents sister Beverley brother John Chas grandparents J R Massey Rupert and E E Haines Luther nsville and numerous relatives. Out of town relatives attended from Bainbridge and distant areas.
Dr A J Phillips aged 72 and dean emeritus of Andrew College for 35 years died after a long career linked to the school at Cuthbert. Survivors include his wife Gertrude of Cuthbert a son H J Phillips of Columbia S C and a grandson in Columbia. Burial was at West View Cemetery Atlanta.
The local school board unanimously elects Rev. E. H. Dunn to the faculty, succeeding Sanford Fitzsimmons who resigned to take a job in Warner Robins. Dunn is noted as a former principal and is welcomed by faculty and friends.
