Two Die In Chair For Slaying At Americus
LeRoy Scrutchens and Joe Porter, both Negroes, were executed in the electric chair at Reidsville State Prison Friday for the murder of Perry Cannon, an elderly night watchman, in Americus last Halloween. Scrutchens admitted involvement and asked forgiveness. Porter claimed presence but no part in the killing and urged Scrutchens not to kill. Jury in Sumter County convicted them after a six minute deliberation.

Macon December 31 C Arthur Cheatham director of Georgia's Department of Veterans Service warns veterans with service connected disabilities to file claims immediately. Claims may be filed at 67 veterans service offices statewide. VA will require service connection before outpatient care or civilian hospital admission after January 1. VA hospitals will treat emergencies and non service connected disabilities. The courthouse veterans office is open daily to assist.

Grand Jury foreman J H Neisler and clerk B W Hinton Jr oversaw one day of work. County property inspections and official books review reported as excellent.

Washington January 5 The Truman administration erased the 17 billion price tag on the European recovery program plans. Congress will be asked to vote funds annually rather than an overall target.
