Taylor County Grand Jury presents 1948 recommendations in Georgia

The Taylor Superior Court January term grand jury commends Honorable T Hicks Fort and Solicitor General Ed Wohlwender J for guidance. It notes the convict camp clean, jail needs repairs, court room ceilings to be repaired, and repeated repair recommendations. Peanut quotas suspended for 1948 crop by GovInt

Secretary of Agriculture Anderson announced there will be no marketing quotas on the 1948 peanut crop due to world shortages of foods fats and oils. Farmers may plant and market freely, with quotas previously set for 1948 removed though machinery remains for possible future years.

Two Die In Chair For Slaying At Americus

LeRoy Scrutchens and Joe Porter, both Negroes, were executed in the electric chair at Reidsville State Prison Friday for the murder of Perry Cannon, an elderly night watchman, in Americus last Halloween. Scrutchens admitted involvement and asked forgiveness. Porter claimed presence but no part in the killing and urged Scrutchens not to kill. Jury in Sumter County convicted them after a six minute deliberation.

Macon December 31 C Arthur Cheatham director of Georgia's Department of Veterans Service warns veterans with service connected disabilities to file claims immediately. Claims may be filed at 67 veterans service offices statewide. VA will require service connection before outpatient care or civilian hospital admission after January 1. VA hospitals will treat emergencies and non service connected disabilities. The courthouse veterans office is open daily to assist.

January Term Superior Court Adjourns in Taylor County

The January term of Taylor County Superior Court adjourned Wednesday after a three day session. Judge T Hicks Fort presided with Solicitor General Ed Wohlwender Jr and Court Reporter R O Perkins assisting. Civil hearings dominated Monday and Tuesday, criminal docket opened Wednesday. Grand Jury foreman J H Neisler and clerk B W Hinton Jr oversaw one day of work. County property inspections and official books review reported as excellent.

Reduction of 17 Billion From Long Term Relief Agreed to by President

Washington January 5 The Truman administration erased the 17 billion price tag on the European recovery program plans. Congress will be asked to vote funds annually rather than an overall target. Tax cuts and cost of living curbs loom as election campaigns influence budgeting and policy. Rep Knutson plans a 5.6 billion income tax cut bill on a this or nothing basis. It would remove about 6,059,000 low income and elderly from tax rolls. Other issues include military readiness housing shortages rent control and health insurance amid political campaigning.
