The local Lions Club sponsored a gas and oil sale at Peed Bros. Service Station, concluding successfully Saturday. The write up notes community praise and reflects on local business activity and area events around Warner Robins and Taylor county.
The longtime Atlanta physician Dr Mulkey West died at his home Saturday after retiring from practice due to ill health. He was born in Butler and survived by his wife and several relatives. Funeral services were held Monday at Spring Hill Methodist church with Rev Wilson Sneed officiating and interment at Westview cemetery. Pallbearers included local doctors and society members.
Butler Lions Club operated Peed Brothers Service Station for a day. Members sold 1,700 gallons of gasoline and offered wash and greasing services, earning 193.65. Proceeds go toward paying for heavy band instruments for Butler High School. The club thanks the public for support.
Taylor County resident Lester Roberts died at Montgomery hospital after months of illness. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church near Butler with Elder M. A. Hall officiating. interment in Bethel Cemetery. Edwards Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr and Mrs Giles will observe their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a reception at their home from 4 to 5 pm Sunday. The event, hosted by their sons and daughters, is expected to draw relatives and friends from near and far to celebrate the milestone.

Butler FFA joins Georgia state officials for National FFA Week February 18 to 25 led by Dr. M D Collins state superintendent and state FFA officers. Butler chapter has 102 members engaging in corn cotton pigs and beef projects plus shop work and contests earning prize money from Sears Firestone Trust Company of Georgia and Cotton Producers Association.
The Wesley and Union Methodist churches observe Expansion Day on the first Sunday in March at Sand Bethel and Howard and on the third Sunday in March at Mauk. Special offerings for nine church causes will be collected, aiming to match dollars with church membership. Contributions support schools, hospitals, scholarships, loans, new enterprises, and assembly grounds. Everyone is invited to attend and participate.
About 2600 Taylor County voters cast ballots on Tuesday to choose four year term officials with a runoff in the County Ordnary race. Incumbent J R Lunsford led the tally with 1174 votes, Bussey Childs 1023, and Wm H Neisler 334. Sheriff Charlie J Wright won the nomination with 1759 votes. Other nominees included W H Elliston for county school superintendent with 1428 to 1156 for E H Dunn, and three county commissioners re-nominated: E H Bazemore 1814, Walter Wainwright 1529, Lewis Watson 1590. Coroner J H Peacock defeated J C Griggs, while Elmon Jarrell, C H Adams, and Robert Butler secured nominations in their uncontested races. Additional county board of education members were listed for several districts. A full official returns table will appear next week.
Atlanta news notes the House passed a bill to add a second judgeship in the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit. The Muscogee delegation expects Gov. Griffin to sign and the new seat to fill this fall for January 1957. Both judges may preside over Superior Court sessions across six counties. salary matches the current presiding jurist.
Arthur Powell of Fred Astaire Studio will present a two hour dance recital at Butler Gym Thursday evening to benefit the Taylor County Wealth Association. Admission is 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults. Bring the children for entertaining fundraiser.
Vienna and Dodge Hi earn Class C district spots for the state tourney by defeating Butler and Pitts at Abbeville Gym. Vienna upset Pitts 77-67 to win the Central Division, while Dodge Hi edged Georgetown 73-72 and then fell to Vienna 65-60 in the final. Butler finished fourth after a 102-64 loss to Pitts. Davis led Butler with 21 in the final game.
A Polk Jarrell, longtime Georgia educator, is named to succeed the late Dr. Paul S Barrett as director of the Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon and the Georgia School for the Deaf at Cave Springs. He previously served 12 years as assistant director and four as counselor in central and south Georgia. Jarrell, son of F. C. Jarrell, holds AB and MA degrees from the University of Georgia and has led Chattahoochee County High School as superintendent. He has been active in the Georgia High School Association and serves on a Washington committee with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. He is married to Carolyn Parham. they have two daughters.
Robert T. Cochran 39, prominent Butler citizen, died of a heart attack at his home Tuesday afternoon after feeling ill all day. He led the Cotton Warehouse and Gunnery business, fertilizer manufacturing, and farming. Survived by wife Marion Payne Cochran, two sons Cadet Tom Cochran II and Bob Cochran, and two daughters Fran and Nita Cochran. Funeral was at Butler Baptist Church with interment at Bloodworth Cemetery.
Taylor county relatives and Thomaston neighbors celebrate the return of Artie McChargue family members who left Georgia in 1923. The 13 person clan includes parents five sisters two brothers and four children. More than 100 kinfolk gathered Sunday for an elaborate churchground dinner at Britt McCharge residence.
Butler PTA president Vernon Reddish announces the regular Feb 16 meeting is moved to Friday February 24 at 8 pm. Hon. Ralph McGill, editor of the Atlanta Constitution, will be guest speaker due to another engagement. All parents and the public are urged to attend.
