Public Hanging Ordered for Jessie Cook in 1886 Taylor County

The Taylor Superior Court ordered Jessie Cook to be hanged in public on September 17, 1886. The case, prosecuted after his 1885 murder conviction, upheld by the Georgia Supreme Court, moved from the bar to the common jail for safety before the gallows near the Taylor county courthouse.

Roosevelt Ball Draws Large Crowd at Persons Lake

A big turnout from Taylor and nearby counties filled Persons Lake Saturday night January 28 for the Roosevelt Ball. Sponsored by Col. G C Stone of the Taylor County Infantile Paralysis Committee, the event raised funds to help crippled children walk and regain health. Music was by Sam Pear's Orchestra of Macon. Attendees reported an enjoyable evening and Col. Stone said no other benefit entertainment would be held locally this year.

Governor Rivera extended the 1939 Georgia auto license tag deadline by ten days. Purchases may be made until midnight February 10 without the $1.26 penalty, a decision announced from Atlanta.

Butler City Receives Federal Grant for Beautification

Mayor J R Wilson announced a $28 052 federal grant made available to Butler in December 1988. The funds will fund a beautification project likely to begin March first, with citizen and alderman cooperation urged for the best use of the money. The grant came through Congressman Stephen Pace and former Mayor O D Gorman and city Aldermen.

Mrs. J Brooks 86 Dies at Home in Butler Tuesday

Mrs Jennie Brooks aged 86 died at her son H J Brooks home in Butler Tuesday night after a year of illness. She was lifelong Taylor County resident, widow of Martin Brooks, and a longtime Camp Ground Methodist member. Funeral held at Camp Ground church with Rev E A Martin. interment in Camp Ground cemetery.
