Governor Talmadge cancels state ball for inauguration
Gov Herman Talmadge announced on Christmas Day there will be no state ball after his January 9 inauguration. He said no social events are wise during the austere period as Georgia soldiers die abroad. A 4 to 6 p m reception at the executive mansion will be the only observance, open to every Georgian.

Death of Geo W Pugh Laments Stewart Countians
Stewart county mourns Geo W Pugh longtime Lumpkin merchant and public servant who died suddenly after months of ill health. A funeral was held Tuesday at Lumpkin Methodist Church on his 80th birthday with Rev. J F Shell and Rev. J L Brown officiating. He served as mayor and on education boards among many community roles, was born to John and Mrs. Pugh of Batesville Virginia, and married Clara Willett in 1896 in Lumpkin.

Williams Dies at 84 in Reynolds Public Notice
Funeral services for Willis Augustus Williams 84 were held at Goddard’s Funeral Chapel Reynolds with Elder Comer officiating. Burial followed at Hill Crest Cemetery. Williams died December 20 at his daughter’s Reynolds home after long illness. He was born November 29 1866 in Taylor County and resided there most of his life. He is survived by several relatives including Mrs. W. C. McGinty Junction City and Mrs. R. H. Parks Reynolds.

Walter Damrosch conductor and composer dies of a heart attack in New York at age 88. He led the Metropolitan Opera at 23 and later opened Carnegie Hall with a major musical festival. Famous Tax Tree Yields For Montgomery County Farm
The Tax Tree on L. C. Graham’s Montgomery county farm produced 483 pounds of pecans in 1950, selling at 28 cents per pound for a total of 135.24 dollars. Historically the tree yielded 651 pounds three years earlier before wind damaged it, with records showing consistent production since 1900 except 1949.
