Coolidge Night Police Officer Beckham Shot to Death
In Coolidge Georgia the night police officer Nathaniel A Beckham was found dead from a shotgun blast in the early morning. Sheriff D J Law said the slaying occurred around dawn, and the body was found at 5 am by an Atlanta truck driver who usually meets Beckham daily.

World's Strongest Man Returns from Olympics in Australia
Paul Anderson of Toccoa, Olympic heavyweight lifting champion, touched down in Atlanta from the Olympic Games in Australia. A motorcade greeted him at the airport and the contingent then proceeded to the capitol before returning home. He appeared in good health after an illness in Australia.

Pine Mountain Scouts Win District Trophy in 1956
Thomaston Ga December 11 The Pine Mountain District Boy Scouts of America received the Flint River Council District Trophy at the annual Newnan banquet. Pine Mountain beat Spalding by 171 points on growth measures including membership units explorers and Boy Life subscriptions. The district formed in 1956 from Upson Pike and Lamar, led by Julius Bostwick and Harvey Beckham, with nine new units and 114 new boy members and 63 adult members by December 1956.

Cordele Carriers Earn 25-Year Accident-Free Awards
Cordele Georgia two rural carriers L E Felder and W E Parrish were awarded for 25 years without an accident on 90 mile routes along US Highways 41 and 280. Postmaster Wiley Johnston presented the honors noting the achievement amid traffic hazards. Felder began in 1912 and Parrish in 1928 with Felder recalling horse and buggy days and occasional bicycle testing.

In Macon Georgia Mrs Mary Hudson unearthed an original land grant dated January 25 1822 for 202 acres in Houston County. The deed to a pioneer settler was made to John Clarke then governor of Georgia and later passed within the Rainey family.

Moonshiners Sugar Helps Aid Christmas Fund in Upson County
In Thomaston Georgia Sheriff Bray busted a liquor still and found 500 pounds of sugar at the site. With Judge McGehee's approval the sheriff handed the sugar to the Empty Stocking Fund which will distribute it in 70 bags with food baskets to needy families at Christmas. Rev W H Ruff said the fund broke 100 pound bags into 70 smaller bags for distribution.
