Dr. Purcell assistant state superintendent says Georgia must add at least 14 million dollars to next year’s state school budget. He specifies 8 million for new children and foundation items and 6 million for a 200 dollar teacher raise.
Georgia Power Co sends 1957 tax payments totaling 10 553.43 to Taylor County official and 2 745.70 to Crawford County official. The company’s 1957 property tax will total 4 758 700 with funds split to general, schools, cities, towns and state. Municipal partnership payments to 348 municipalities totaled 1 710 882 earlier this year.
A Sunday afternoon band concert in Butler drew a large crowd with attendees praising the youngsters' music. They thanked Band Director Basil Rigney for promoting music and appreciation. Monday night the band members were hosted at a Christmas party by Mr and Mrs Rigney at the Community House.

The Gordon- Carson Chapter UDC and Reynolds Woman's Club hosted a two session Holiday House Tour on Dec 8 drawing visitors from Butler Marshallville Fort Valley Ideal Montezuma Oglethorpe Vienna and Macon. Guides from the local high school led guests through homes of Whatley Waters Whatley and Tankersley with beige white and gold themes and festive decorations.
In Ellabell Georgia a rural tenant house burned in subfreezing weather killing eight people. Victims include Mary Lee Mays 49 Pete Dixon and six of their children all identified as African American. Anderson Mays 46 and a 13 year old daughter escaped with injuries. The fire origin remains undetermined and the stove heat source noted.
The Herald states the next issue will publish Monday. News for the following week must be in the office by Saturday this week December 21 to be included.
The City of Reynolds will hold an election on Tuesday January 7 for a Mayor and two Aldermen. Incumbent Mayor Henry G Hicks seeks reelection. Councilman Joe Goodroe runs for reelection to the City Council. Retiring Council member L W Cooke will not seek another term and Henry Hobbs announces candidacy to fill the Cooke vacancy. The city clerk notes additional candidates may enter the race.
Tom Bone, prominent building contractor from this city, was injured Sunday night when his car left the pavement three miles south of Thomaston in Upson county. The vehicle overturned several times. Bone received two broken bones and multiple cuts and bruises. He was treated at Upson County Hospital and returned home Monday.
Governor Griffin presents a 107 page progress report to the General Assembly highlighting education gains and efficiency records. He claims Georgia is experiencing its greatest forward progress since the state's founding and notes improvements in school facilities and overall state departments.
Merchants in the city of Reynolds will close their places of business two days next week Wednesday and Thursday December 25 and 26. It is hoped this will not inconvenience the public and will allow employees a short Christmas vacation.
Dr C P Savage Montezuma physician and state medical examiner appointee ran unopposed for mayor of Montezuma Georgia. Incumbent A C Felton III retired from seeks re election and did not stand for another term in this unopposed race.
Grand and Traverse jurors were drawn to serve at the January term 1958 of Taylor Superior Court. The list, prepared from a drawing held November 22, 1957, includes many jurors such as Woodfin Hinton J and H. Brewer Z. R. McCorkle along with numerous others across multiple venires and districts.
President Eisenhower arrived in Paris for the NATO summit urging allied unity to stave off a Red dictatorship in the space age. He appeared fit after a mild stroke and was greeted by cheering crowds as Prime Minister McMillan of Britain arrived earlier, signaling a revived Western alliance despite French resentments over Tunisia arms shipments.
Macon police say Homer Lester of Macon, armed and resisting a peace warrant, held off about 20 officers with gunfire before a woods surrounding capture. He faces roughly four counts of assault with intent to murder, Bibb County officials report.
Postmaster Carl Hobbs announces the local post office will be open each weekday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. including Thursday afternoons, through the Christmas season.
More than 300 delegates from 41 Georgia Electric Membership Corporations met in the Henry Grady Hotel Atlanta December 9 and 10 to review yearly activities and plan 1958. Sen Russell spoke at the banquet where Miss Allene Burke of Millen was crowned Miss Georgia Rural Electrification with Miss Donna Jane Jay of Warner Robins as alternate. Miss Angela Hunt of Roberta, last year’s winner, also attended and helped crown the new queen.
Edwin Allen of Butler opens Allen's Flower and Gift Shop in the Buena Vista post office building with Mrs. Miriam Finkle in charge. The open house drew many locals as Betty McCorkle, ex Marion County High School Home Economics head, attended. The shop operates 9 to 5 daily Monday through Saturday with after hours reach via Mrs. Finkle at home.
Miss Wilhelmina Neisler wins the Charles Palmer Medal in composition with a 97.3 grade. Bonnie Layfield Elaine Posey Carolyn Joiner Lynda Barfield and Jimmy tie for fifth with scores above 90. Neisler also receives a scholarship offer from Wesleyan University in Middletown.
