Columbus Ga December 17 Harry A Hanes 31 of Atlanta was severely shocked at the Columbus gas plant this afternoon and is not expected to live authorities said he suffered a fatal electrical injury while on duty at the plant no further details were released
Woodland Georgia Talbot county near Manchester reports a post office safe blown Saturday night and about 25 dollars stolen. Postmaster Annig¢ L Pound notified J W Cole chief postal inspector in Atlanta of the event.
Atlanta December 16 W E Page collector of internal revenue for Georgia returned to his office Monday after several weeks illness. As the collector returned his chief lieutenant Frank B Boyce Jr remained at home with a severe cold.
Swainsboro Ga Dec 16 The Swainsboro Forest Blade a weekly newspaper is up for sale on the first Tuesday of January George Kirkland Jr administrator of the estate of the late W E Boatright editor and publisher of the paper oversees the sale The paper was bid in for resale by the estate at 11000 dollars earlier this month
Talbotton Ga Dec 16 4H M Jones 69 died at his Woodland home after weeks of illness He was a Methodist church member with services held Wednesday morning and interment in Woodland cemetery Surviving are wife Carrie Braddy two daughters Mrs W S Butler Fort Valley Mrs W G Holmes Woodland one son John M Jones Cuthbert one sister Mrs Sim Cook Wooland
Macon Georgia faces division as the 40-and-8 Society of the American Legion asks theaters stay open Sundays under sponsorship. Macon theater manager A P Barry has submitted the issue to city council. Bishop W N Ainsworth leads a campaign against Sunday shows after return from St Louis as head of the Anti-Saloon League. Other prominent residents issue public statements for and against the plan.
The Huey P. Long Bridge spanning the Mississippi River was dedicated in New Orleans on Monday with thousands attending. Mrs. Huey P. Long rode in one of the first cars. the bridge cost nearly 15 million dollars and was built by the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and the Louisiana State Highway Commission. A special train carried state and railroad officials for the first crossing while a transportation pageant highlighted the ceremonies.
In Americus Georgia on December 16 three women were injured when a car driven by Frank Harrold collided at Brown and East Church streets with a second car driven by Miss Mary Kell. Mrs Frank Harrold sister of ex governor Clifford Walker sustained a fractured collarbone. Mrs George W Bacot had a broken rib and Mrs Thomas Harrold Sr a scalp wound. All three expected to recover. the Kell occupants uninjured and the other two Harrolds escaped unhurt. The slow speed crash left under investigation to determine fault.
Work on Mitchell counties new courthouse at Camilla starts next week. The building will cost 112950 dollars and be financed with county and PWA funds.
A crash into a telephone pole near Hampton on Tuesday killed a young white man and lightly injured his female companion. Authorities had not yet identified either person, and the investigation continued.
Mrs. R L Barnett a long time Newton resident and her son L 5 Barnett and housekeeper Collier perished when the Barnett home burned early Sunday Neighbors alerted the Camilla Fire Department but the blaze was fatal Mrs Barnett a veteran of East Dougherty County would have been 87 on January 1 and is survived by two daughters and two sons Dr J M Barnett of Albany and Albert Barnett of Newton plus daughters Mrs L C Benton and Mrs R H May Florence Cheshire former Miss Florence Cheshire of Damascus was also identified as Collier prior to marriage to Florence Cheshire
Talbotton Ga Dec 16 The home of Dr G L Carter and the vacant Weston hotel were destroyed by an early Sunday fire. A negro man spotted the blaze and volunteers could not bring it under control due to strong winds. The Carter home stood opposite caught fire from drifting flames. Origin of the blaze unknown. The Carter house formerly the Clairborne hotel noted as site of Georgia's first supreme court. Weston hotel first known as Downs home, once owned by the state banking department. Losses partly covered by insurance.
Wolf, the police dog of Ben Maury, leading farmer in Lamar county, has become a top private postman. Each evening he goes to the railroad tracks to receive the paper from the mail clerk and then carries it back to his owner. He scratches and barks until someone takes the paper from him.
Savannah announces January 1 changes in Central of Georgia staff. W L Richardson moves from freight traffic to Columbus as city ticket agent. W P Stovall shifts from Atlanta to Jacksonville as passenger service agent, with H C Lyle moving to Atlanta and J S Butler replacing Lyle in Macon. Butler then replaces Richardson in Columbus.
The Republican national committee chose Cleveland for next springs party convention to nominate a 1926 presidential candidate. Vote tally: Cleveland 54, Chicago 89, Kansas City 6, by secret ballot. Cleveland touted an auditorium for 15,500 and Erie breezes improving climate.
Mrs Josephine Graham 87 of McRae, mother of Judge Michel Graham of Telfair Superior Court and of Eva Drew governor aide, was in serious condition after a department store fall in Macon yesterday causing a leg fracture.
Buena Vista Georgia reports ongoing building and renovation efforts. Mayor R P Stevens completed a brick filling station and warehouse while merchants repaint and remodel stores. A $7000 community house is under construction with federal, city, and county support, spearheaded by Lions Club members I L Clements R P Stevens and Joe S Burgin. A Wight family home nears completion and University of Georgia horticulturist H H Harvey will oversee WPA roadside beautification with local coordinators Mrs Frank Lowe Sr and Mrs J P Hogg.
Fire in the large Barnesville building owned by B W Middlebrooks caused 35 000 to 40 000 in losses early Wednesday injuring two people and halting traffic for eight hours. Middlebrooks reported 15000 pounds of pecans 100 tons of kudzu feed lost at the Dixie Pecan Exchange. Four hundred eighty bales of cotton in the Summers Bonded Warehouse were lost or damaged. Insurance covered stock and cotton losses. building cost only partly covered. Fire wall contained spread. Fire engineer Philip Byers tripped over a hose and injured his face. Cleve Floyd was slightly hurt by a falling timber.
R E Martin of Columbus, operator of a Georgia Alabama theater chain, buys the lease of Manchester Y M C A theater from W F Griffin who plans to move to Vienna Ga on January 1 to run a theater there. Griffin to devote full time to the Vienna venture. County school funds losses render superintendents and bondsmen liable per Supreme Court ruling in a Franklin County suit for 2181 dollars. Wreckers clear an old Roberta school for a new brick building with 418 rooms funded 45 percent by WPA and local sources totaling 45000 dollars. Safety pledge drive wins support from over 100000 Georgians as the Constitution Safety Council gains backing for Safe Driving. Albert Davis Avera, 71, Peach County farmer, dies after two years sickness. Peach officials search for two black suspects after a Saturday night shooting during a grocery hold up. Mrs Monroe Melvin is wounded. J F Padgett unharmed.
Augusta, Ga December 12 three trainmen died and ten injured when two passenger trains on the Georgia road collided head on at Dearing thirty miles from Augusta. The wreck, the line’s most disastrous in years, occurred as one train waited for a side track. Killed were A J Kirby 46 fireman on the Augusta Atlanta train W H Wallace 65 engineer of the Atlanta Augusta train and Edgar A Ewing 58 engineer of the same train. Wallace and Ewing died in a local hospital.
