Taylor County Sheriff J. M. Bone announced that Americus State Police will staff his office in the local courthouse each Friday from 9 30 p m to 1 0 p m to conduct drivers license examinations. People seeking exams should visit the sheriff’s office any Friday.
Taylor County farmers and businessmen met at Reynolds Golf Course on August 28 to establish a Taylor County Livestock Association. University of Georgia Extension expert R E Davis spoke on forming similar groups and livestock production. A five-member board was chosen, with C E Whatley as president, B M Montgomery as vice president, and Hugh Neisler as treasurer. By laws outline improving livestock, sponsoring shows, and financing deserving farmers and farm boys. county agent authorized to publicize plans and accept applications.
Joseph Wallace, 14, son of Mrs. Jewell Windham and the late W. W. Wallace, contracted a toxin from thunder wood found by watercourses near Butler while fishing. Early-week medical care slowed the spread and he has since shown steady improvement.
Mr. Fred Peed received a postcard from his uncle Col. Theo J. McGee formerly of the city. McGee, traveling in Europe, reported Aug 19 from Warsaw Poland and expected to move toward Russia the next day. Cablegrams say he has faced difficulty leaving the area where war may erupt. friends fear for his safety though not proven endangered.
Mrs Harry Peacock longtime Ideal matron dies after illness at home in Ideal Wednesday night. Funeral held at two o clock Thursday with Rev W W Whaley and Rev E L Jenkins officiating. Burial in family plot at Ellaville Cemetery. She was born near Garden Valley and taught in Macon county schools before marriage to Mr Peacock in 1917. She helped in the family mercantile business and later worked as a WPA in the third district. Survivors include her husband, a son Harry Jr, her mother Mrs Bell, and sisters Mrs J B Wall and Mrs Warren Randall.
Change in But cher High school library personnel takes effect September first. The WPA project library, two years under Mrs Mae Riley, ends due to the 18 months relief rule. Mrs Byrd succeeds Riley. Riley departs with praise for her efficient service and Byrd is deemed well qualified and obliging.
The Reynolds Woman's Improvement Club will hold its first meeting of the year at the Club House next Wednesday afternoon at 2 30 o'clock. All members are urged to attend.
Prof. E. M. Palmer, superintendent of Ellaville High School, spoke before a large attentive congregation at Butler Baptist Church on Sunday eleven o'clock. Rev. R. C. Howard was away unexpectedly, leaving Palmer to deliver the discourse.
A jail break at Taylor County Jail Tuesday night freed two inmates held on serious charges and led to the recapture of a burglar suspect. S. T. Mosley, 26, condemned to death for murder, and Albert Morton, 25, charged with burglary and arson, were at large with a manhunt under Sheriff Bone. Zander Walker, colored, was recaptured after being charged with burglary. The break involved ripping a cell and drilling a hole in an outer wall.
Hon J W Edwards recuperating from appendix operation last week at his Butler home he was moved to Middle Georgia sanitarium Macon for observation Doctors pronounced his trouble acute appendicitis and he underwent immediate operation He shows gradual strength and optimism for a swift return Edwards is a prominent Taylor county business leader president of Citizens State Bank and a Georgia legislator representative.
Suffering for months from low eye affection that affected both eyes, Fred Peed was admitted Monday to an Atlanta hospital for a painful, difficult operation. An Atlanta eye specialist performed the procedure, which reports say he endured well. He plans about ten days of hospital care. His mother Mrs. F A Peed accompanied him and will remain during recovery.
A Taylor County board meeting fixes all white schools in the county to open Monday September 4 as the State Board of Education guarantees a four month term and the district hopes for a seven month term with attendance driving funding. Superintendent W T Austin stresses cooperation to raise daily attendance and ensure proper teacher certification before duties. Also noted are opening programs for Butler High School Reynolds High School and local exams and classifications for pupils.
The Central of Georgia Railroad seeks permission from the Georgia Public Service Commission to discontinue passenger trains Nos. 1 and 2 between Macon and Columbus due to loss of revenue. A hearing is scheduled Sept. 18 at the Public Service Commission office in the State Capitol Atlanta. Train No. 1 to Columbus departs Butler at 1 24 p m and No. 2 to Macon at 1 42 p m, the only day trains serving this area and key for U S mail and railway express. Protests and personal representations are expected at the Atlanta hearing.
The post office will be closed next Monday in observance of Labor Day with Sunday hours for mail receipt and delivery. Rural routes will not depart on the holiday. patrons should call at the office between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. The piece also notes a neon sign for Butler Drug Co. and praises Dr. Leon Theus, its proprietor.
