William Simmons a 20 year old from California had his voice restored after surgeons in Savannah Georgia performed a second operation on the same skull area. He had lost speech following prior head surgery five years ago. After the operation he spoke to his nurse, ending days of silence since illness on the street.

Study of cotton grade and staple planned nationwide

Abandon effort to drill for oil near Thomasville
Thomasville Ga Aug 4 The well drilled 8838 feet for oil between here and Monticello Fla is being abandoned this week and the casing pulled. After spending about 1250000 in attempts by Bray and Company and subsequent operators no yield was found despite attempts to clear mud and water with an air lift. Promoters still believe the region holds potential and may seek new leases to drill elsewhere.

Habersham County Opens New Highway Beltline
Habersham county residents celebrated the completion of paving on a trunk line through Georgia North Carolina and Florida at Tallulah Lodge near Tallulah Falls. The highway will shorten the Asheville North Carolina to Atlanta route by about 60 miles and save roughly two hours of driving. A large barbecue and fruit displays accompanied the event. State highway officials led by John N. Holder spoke, with Clarkesville’s W Erwin as committee chair.

Youth Loses Arm in Accidental Gun Discharge
In Barnesville Georgia on a Saturday James Hale aged 13 son of Mr and Mrs J E Hale lost his arm after a load of shot was fired at close range from a gun carried by a companion. The gun was laid on a log, tipped, and discharged when picked up. Hale's arm was amputated just above the elbow.

Methodists change date of conference in Georgia
Advices from Savannah report the South Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South will convene in Columbus from November 7 to 8. The one day postponement lets attendees vote in the national election on November 6 and still reach Columbus. The change was decided at Bishop Beauchamp’s cabinet meeting in Savannah. The cabinet also created the office of Sunday School secretary to devote full time to Sunday School work.

Mother in Israel Gone to Her Reward After Long Illness
Mrs. George Nelson, about 70, died at her Panhandite home after months of illness. Interment was at Glover's schoolhouse with Rev. J. W. Haley officiating. A longtime resident, she was daughter of Gillie McCrary and sister of Henry McCrary. She is survived by two brothers C E McCrary and F R McCrary, four sisters, two sons Joe and Jack Nelson, and a daughter Mrs Going of Macon.

Georgia's first bale of 1928 cotton was donated to the Democratic national campaign fund. Raised by C. O. Smith of Moville, it weighed 430 pounds and graded good middling. Auctioned by J. Hope Tigner, it was bid in by T. W. Tift for the exchange. Proceeds to be sent to John J. Raskob for the campaign. The bale was compressed to fit into a plane for shipment to New York.
