War era notes list Confederate volunteers casualties

The item preserves a 1864 1865 communication from Jasper County urging readers to review a list of Georgia volunteers fired wounded and missing from the 40th or so company. It references the Battle of the Wilderness and the Battle of Spotsylvania with names and outcomes. The note attributes publication to the Macon Telegraph and Confederate and notes its earlier appearance in 1865.

L Cooper Named Superintendent for Taylor County Electric

Mr G L Cooper, known figure in the community, is named superintendent for the Rural Electrification Administration project in Taylor County. The Taylor County Electric Membership Organization leads a 51 mile power line expansion to serve 157 customers with a $50,000 allotment. Ulrich Electric Company of Augusta conducts construction. power expected by early fall.

Taylor County Board Enacts Immunization Health Program

The Taylor County Board of Education approves a health program requiring all children under eight to show a pink diphtheria vaccination card at school. A county clinic offers free immunizations for six months to six years, with a 10 cent fee for six to eight year olds. The program targets typhoid, hookworm, tonsils, adenoids, teeth, and vision and hearing issues to boost student efficiency.

Local mill and business property sold to T W Upton

It will be of interest to the people of this community to learn that Mr. T. W. Upton of Buena Vista, has purchased the J. L. Harmon grist mill and combination home, store and filling station located several miles south of Butler on Highway No. Three. Mr. Upton, it is understood, took over this property this week.

Talbotton Man Pryor Culpepper Dief in Bed

Pryor Culpepper aged 86 was found dead in bed at his Talbotton home Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Olive Branch Methodist Church with Rev. Wm. Irvin officiating. Interment followed in the family plot. A longtime farmer, he lived with his brothers Bartow and Gardner Culpepper. Died of natural causes. no inquest was deemed necessary.

Walter Perkins to Washington for farm legislation talks

Mrs Edwards brother Walter C Perkins, first assistant to State Commissioner of Agriculture Columbus Roberts, is called to Washington to confer with commissioners from other states on possible farm legislation. The trip follows a Louisiana plan suggested by H D Wilson, aiming to present the southern farmer’s case. Perkins is a seasoned dirt farmer with diverse operations and broad practical insight.

Tax Returns Show Decrease In Taylor County

Tax Commissioner P A Jenkins completed revising 1987 property values in Taylor County. Tax Equalizers adjusted the books, showing a decrease of 89555 dollars from the previous year. The records will be sent to the Comptroller General of Georgia for approval and then returned for the Tax Commissioner to prepare the digest.

Macon Postmaster Pioneers Rural Air Mail Test Flight

Macon’s postmaster W A Pattillo becomes the first U S postmaster to fly a rural air mail route escorting the mail plane from Macon to Atlanta. Capt Dick Fall carried 700 letters from Macon and mail from 12 Georgia towns as test flights begin to gauge future regular service. Pattillo, VP of the Georgia National Association of Postmasters, conducted the flight and back stamps for Macon collectors.

Illness of Atlanta Couple Saddens Friends

It will be a source of regret to the many friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wallace of Atlanta to learn of their critical illness, each under treatment at an Atlanta hospital. Both natives of the city, he the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wallace, she the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Windham. Mr. Wallace has served the Southern railway system for thirty five years, much of it as passenger train conductor on the main stem.

Campbell Contract Wins Columbus Macon Road Paving Award

Campbell Contracting company has been awarded the contract for paving a 6.2 mile segment of the Columbus Macon highway in Taylor county. Officials were notified Monday after bids opened by the state highway board around ten days ago. Campbell was named low bidder for a second time, with final award awaiting federal bureau of roads approval. Work will begin when the work order arrives, expected soon.

Special Session Convenes To Try Musslewhite Case

The Taylor superior court held a special term to try the Musslewhite heirs versus F A Ricks H K Sealy and American Surety Company. The 1985 October verdict for defendants was reversed by the Court of Appeals and the case is retried on appellate issues. Attorneys for heirs and administrators are named.

Taylor's First Bale Brings 14 Cents

Mr. C. D. Hartman a farmer near Reynolds brought in the first bale of new cotton Saturday from his farm. The bale weighed about 610 pounds and was graded strict middling. Neisler Gin at Ralls warehouse paid 14 cents per pound. Many local farmers will begin picking cotton next week. The cotton crop outlook is the most promising in a number of years. Merchants of Taylor county are stocking large quantities of seasonable merchandise, adding clerks, and preparing for heavy business this fall.

Warm Springs Trip For Local 4-H Clubs

Four H Club members from Butler area are invited to a Warm Springs outing on Wednesday August 18 meeting at six AM at the Butler courthouse. Talbot County Car Collision Injures Eight

Eight people were hurt in a head on crash on the Columbus Macon highway in Talbot county. Five were taken to Columbus City Hospital, including Mrs. Katie Lou Williams and B M Williams. The accident occurred two miles from the Muscogee line. three local residents were treated in Talbot county.

School Opening Date Set For September 6

County Board of Education orders Butler and Reynolds public schools open Monday morning September 6 at nine o'clock. Rural schools to start September 18, Colored schools around October. Make up work must meet teachers' requirements. Incidental fee set at 5,000 in high school and 2,60 in grammar for the nine month term.
