Butler fills with visitors and residents as numerous social visits, births, sickness and recoveries appear. The community notes many guests from Macon Augusta Jacksonville and Reynolds while court business and church events keep pace with social updates.
At the bride's home last Sunday, B C Pierce married Irene Davis with Rev M T Gaultney officiating. The ceremony drew only immediate relatives and a few friends. Pierce is a well known county farmer and Irene is highly regarded. The Herald offers sincere congratulations.
Mrs. Lula Scandrett hosts her relative Miss Van Mitchell of Butler at her Thirteenth avenue home. Miss Mitchell began as one of Cordele’s first teachers when the Presbyterian church ran the academy and the bell summoned pupils. Now teaching English at Buena Vista High, she reflects on Cordele once known as the Magic City of the Pines and Hub City of Southwest Georgia.
Society notes describe a July 25 gathering hosted by Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Peagler for guest Miss Gertrude Blalock of Jonesboro. Other guests included Miss Pauline Jordan of Gainesville and Miss Pearle Montfort. Guests enjoyed prizes from a spelling game, music, ice cream, and cake on a decorated veranda.
Miss Ruth Adams hosted a Tuesday evening gathering at her parents home honoring Miss Myrtice Lipsey of Albany. Attendees included Laura Beeland Nettie Mae Jones Viola Foy Christine Rawls Maud Byrd Rosa Fountain Jewel Bartlett Bettilee Davis Myrtice Lipsey Ruth Adams Mesees James Childs Zach Respess George Childs Joe Rawls Earl Wright Frank Gray Warren Bartlett and Galloway Boland. Katie Nell Adams organized the event ensuring all had a pleasant time.
The Taylor county Teachers Institute ended Friday July 25 with high praise from participants. Prof Bancroft of Mobile spoke on practical schooling as sessions concluded. The institute thanked Prof George D Goddard Supt A S Wallace and Butler hosts for their support and hospitality.
Obituary notes Otis Mathews dies at a private sanatorium in Ashville North Carolina after a long illness. He leaves an estate around 30000 dollars with substantial bequests to Howard Methodist church a sanitary fund in Ashville relatives and several individuals. He was about 45 unmarried and a loyal Methodist.
The Butler people hosted thirty to thirty five Taylor County teachers led by Prof. George D. Godard of Milner. County School Commissioner Wallace arranged comfort and receptions at the Rest Room and a town gathering under UDC auspices with ice cream and social talks.
A sheriff posse misidentified a man from Anniston Alabama during a Friday arrest attempt at Paschal. The suspect Grady Awtry suffered non fatal flesh wounds and was released after his father arrived. The mayor and officers apologized and the case was dropped with the fugitive returning home.
Stockholders of the Farmers Union Warehouse Co. will assemble at the Butler courthouse at 10 A M on Saturday August 16. W W Douglass serves as President.
A.J. McGee, Commander invites all veterans to the annual basket reunion in Reynolds on Wednesday August 13. He lauds the local hosts for their hospitality and urges attendance to come together once more. Butler, Georgia, August 4, 1913.
