Mellon Defrauded Washington Revenue in Tax Suit
The Bureau of Internal Revenue has filed suit before the Board of Tax Appeals to collect 3,075,103.28 in back taxes from Andrew Mellon former secretary of the treasury. The government claims 2,050,068.82 taxes dodged plus 50 percent penalty for evasion. It says Mellon reported 1981 gross income of 10,890,485 with net 1,927,116 and tax 647,559, while his true figures allegedly show gross 15,951,568 and net 13,482,660 with tax 2,697,628.18. Mellon contends a 128,622 share sale of Pittsburgh Coal Co. stock at a loss offset income, but the government says there was no real sale as stock was moved between Mellon entities. The suit cites further alleged fraudulent transactions to generate losses.
