Indications show Hamilton will face a prolonged street car strike with no immediate talks. The dispute centers on pay for dead head runs and alleged union disputes, triggering a citywide taxi and truck reliance while drivers protest Satkamp the conductor.
Louisville reports two tobacco factories have gone non-union and one has locked out workers. The Tobacconists' union withdrew the label from Ryan-Hampton Tobacco Co and Burley Tobacco Co, branding them unfair to organized labor. Brands include Allen County Shepherd Railroad Safety Thirst Strater’s Natural Twist and City Club Smoking. Union voters urged to avoid these brands.
The colored contingent from Hamilton’s quota of the selective draft army will depart Hamilton Monday morning October 20. The executive committee of the Hamilton Commercial and Industrial Association arranged a send off after word reached the draft board. Special farewell services were held October 14 at the Colored A. M. E. church on S. Matument Ave. A second service is planned for Sunday evening with possible address by Congressman Gard. All public and church groups are urged to attend and join the parade forming at YMCA at 7:30 AM for the escort to the station.
The strike continues with about fifty workers inside the plant and new hires bringing the total up while others quit. Six deputies patrol the facility and the court has issued injunctions guiding the lockout and picket lines as laborers claim coercion and pressure to work.
The Castle Dancing Academy run by Hart and Radcliffe announces a benefit dance at the Eagles temple this Saturday October 27. All profits from the event will be donated to the textile workers.
The October Grand Jury returned indictments via Judge Walter Harlan. Walter Brice and William West charged with assault and battery. Louis Schak and William West charged with assault with intent to kill Ford Hamilton and assault and battery.
In New York on October 3, the Ladies Tailors union No. 30 allied with the International Ladies' Garment Workers gained a victory in a strike over working conditions. The piece notes workers briefly left the union then returned after a period of being forced to work under poor terms.
