New York City report from Facts for Workers notes October 1927 wage scale changes include 58 increases and 4 renewals. It warns rising unemployment threatens continued prosperity, despite lower living costs and modest earnings gains.
The Interstate Commerce Commission reports that absence of automatic train stop devices caused a fatal Francisco Indiana collision on September 3 between a passenger and a freight train. Three workers died and seventeen were injured when an open defective switch caused the crash.
In Portland Oregon President Green argued against economists who mocked organized labor. He said high wages promote business prosperity and improve workers’ food clothing shelter and leisure, fueling the American worker via the AFL to demand higher wages.
Under state law new registrants must pass a literacy test. Of 32,113 people taking the test, about one seventh failed to pass. The article notes the literacy requirement and the registration statistics.
New York Supreme Court delays the Interborough injunction hearing against the American Federation of Labor as defense prep continues. After over twenty six years of peaceful talks the Building Managers Association of Chicago and the Elevator Operators Union sign a two year contract effective November 1. It bars discrimination, sets eight and a half hour days, pays overtime on weekdays Sundays and holidays at time and a half, covers uniform costs, and prohibits strikes or lockouts during the term. Wages range from 122.50 to 140 dollars monthly by class with elevator starters earning ten dollars more. Duluth city commissioners defeat a proposed minimum wage ordinance urged by organized labor.
The Chicago Waitresses Union No. 484 marked its silver anniversary with a November 2 dinner dance in the Morrison Hotel Cameo room. President Carrie Alexander presided as toastmistress. гостEdward Flore of the Hotel and Restaurant Employes International Alliance attended from Buffalo NY to help the local celebrate 25 years. Other speakers included Victor Olander, Steve Sumner, Agnes Nestor, John Staggenburg, and Mary McDowell. Separately, Rock Island Moline and Davenport teams joined a local organizing drive aided by their international union.
