U. S. To Give Winter Jobs to Four Million By December 15

President Roosevelt unveils a civil works program to hire four million relief men for winter. Harry L. Hopkins will head the Civil Works Administration financed by 400 million dollars from the federal works fund and state and local contributions. About two million men start November 16 earning about fifty dollars monthly for three months, with the rest to follow by December 1. Projects include parks, sanitation, drainage, public land reclamation, roads, utilities, and public structures. The plan aims to remove employable people from relief rolls and place them in regular jobs.

Baltimore Labor Leader H F Broening Dies at 52

Strikers Return to Captive Mines in Western PA

About 15 000 of the 75 000 striking miners at steel company mines in Western Pennsylvania returned to work on November 6. They had been on strike three months seeking union recognition. After a conference with President Roosevelt, company heads agreed to a settlement toward recognizing the United Mine Workers of America. workers have been returning to work since.
