Executives Draw Up Union Plans in Chicago Meeting

Albert Matha announced the Elevator Operators' Union is preparing a report to members after a conference with Victor A. Olander and President William McFetridge. Atlantic Coast Line pays back wages in NC ruling

The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad will distribute 260000 dollars in back wages to 6469 maintenance of way workers under minimum wage rules from Oct 24, 1938, to May 31, 1940. The payout follows a Federal District Court decree in North Carolina upholding Wage and Hour Division findings.

Pennsylvania jobs gain lift in September figures

Employment at Pennsylvania factories rose nearly 2 percent from August to September, reaching about 952,000 workers. Wage disbursements increased over 3 percent to nearly 24.7 million dollars weekly, per the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. The gains mark an 8 percent rise in employment and a 16 percent payroll increase from spring low levels.

Hershey Workers Win 40-Hour Week Pact in 5 Percent Raise

Hershey Chocolate Corporation and Local 464 of the Bakery and Confectionery Workers Union AFL signed a contract cutting the maximum work week to 40 hours and boosting hourly wages by five percent. The change took effect October 24 as the nationwide 40-hour standard under the Fair Labor Standards Act began. The wage rise compensates for the shift from a 42-hour maximum under the previous contract.

Employment Service Sets Up New Defense Labor Clearance System

The United States Employment Service launches a national labor clearance system covering about 500 defense related occupations to coordinate interstate transfer of workers. A F of L Wins Large Majority in Oneida Casket Vote

In Oneida New York the American Federation of Labor won a strong majority in a vote among National Casket Company employees. Of 176 ballots cast 168 supported the A F of L signaling clear backing for collective bargaining representation.
