Eight Hours And Seven Dollars Wage Scale Adopted

The Washington district council of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners sets a new eight hour day wage of 8744 cents per hour or $7 for 8 hours for 5000 members in Washington and Alexandria. The prior wartime scale was 76 cents an hour or $6 daily. Most contractors have signed or will adopt the new rate when it starts May 4.

Long and Allstatter Machinists Walk Out Over Pay Demands

Long and Allstatter plant machinists entered the shop this week after the company failed to keep promises. In November 12th, demands for a 1 cent per hour increase were made. negotiations continued with a 4 cent per hour concession deemed unsatisfactory. A meeting decided workers would stay idle until promises and pay rise are fulfilled, amid questions about intentions and possible misunderstandings.

Harry Strauss Opens New Union Guided Furniture Store

Harry Strauss opens a new large furniture store at the northeast corner of Third and Ludlow streets after moving from 24 South Third Street. He signed articles with the Retail Clerks union and will run the store under union principles. H C Petzald, former manager, stays on as manager and is a union card holder. The store aims to attract organized labor and friends, with best wishes from Mr. Strauss’s supporters.
