International Labor News Service reports diminished church finances threaten pro Volstead efforts. Methodist and Baptist leaders face curtailed missions and layoffs as funds shrink, likely weakening lobbying in the next Congress amid labor mobilization and reapportionment uncertainty.
A ten member commission named by Secretary Doak includes three trade unionists to study the impact of machinery on workers. The panel met May 20 to plan the study and may influence forthcoming industrial policy. Members include C A Prosser, Perry Reeves, J R Alpine, A O Wharton, and others from AFL and federal agencies. The group will evaluate technological unemployment and propose government studies.
Three firms press Cigar Makers Union No. 14 to take a ten percent wage reduction as a measure during a downturn. The union rejects the proposed cut and criticizes the rationale.
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 12 international labor groups in the U.S. operate old age pension systems with 13,049 pensioners and 3,403,180 dollars in benefits last year. The International Typographical Union contributed over one third of the total. From 1927 to 1930 pensioners more than doubled, while benefits rose 44 percent as labor meetings discuss old age pensions.
Washington report details Doak condemning wage cuts by contractors across industries especially in Texas where unions threatened strikes to block $2 daily reductions. It notes Builders associations opposing cuts in Chicago and San Francisco, with labor ready to strike to defend pay. Doak warns wage reductions breach federal agreements and urges workers to resist cuts.
Washington officials publish a circular urging metal trades unions to resist wage cuts. The letter, signed by AL Pool L. and top officers, calls on locals to inform the public and organize committees to oppose reductions, arguing wages must stay steady to support prosperity. It criticizes cheap labor and urges unity among unions, merchants, and clergy.
In St Louis Mo Wallace B Dopham of Harvard speaks on the psychology of fear among workers and dependents at a business luncheon. He cites 12 000 000 dependents and 7 600 000 halftime workers fearing unemployment and discusses unemployment insurance as a remedy.
