Asheville hosts the AFL Southern Labor Conference May 11 and 12 as the South readies its largest organized labor gathering. Delegates, editors, and officials converge while plans aim to add one million AFL members next year. Wage law violators under Wage Hour and Walsh Healey act report

Washington DC wrangles over wage chiselers as L Metcalfe Walling reports that in nine months ending April 1 over 15,000 firms were required to repay more than 15 million dollars to about 212,000 workers. Inspectors surveyed 30,000 concerns with half found violating laws. many also falsified records.

Rail Unions Push Pay Boost and Set Strike Date

Rail unions including operating and nonoperating members demand about 15 to 16 cents an hour more pay atop a recent nominal raise. Hearings on nonoperating unions show firm intent. Two operating brotherhoods Engineers and Trainmen set a strike date May 18 to push higher wages and better working rules.

Congress and CIO clash over labor war in Congress

Philadelphia AFL chief William Green told the Pennsylvania State Federation of Labor that the CIO has polarized Congress with partisan fights and Communist ties. He warned that pro labor acts have been blocked by CIO opposition and urged unity, nonpartisan endorsements, and a write-in push to save OPA and press housing and Wagner Taft measures through Congress. He likened labor division to a machine without a motor and urged concerted action by state and city unions to back AFL recommendations.

Trades Council Meets In Strong Attendance At Hamilton Meeting

The Hamilton Trades and Labor Council held a well attended Tuesday night session led by President Ray Caldwell. Messages from William Green of the AFL and Phil Hannah of the Ohio State Federation of Labor were read and accepted. Delegates from the Fire Fighters Union and the Firemen and Oilers Union attended as visitors and will be installed next meeting. Picnic committee reported on advertising and purchases for the LeSourdsville Lake event.

Repairs For Highways In Butler County

Butler County plans to repair twenty five miles of highways as part of a state program to spend one hundred thousand dollars on 500 miles of roads. The message reflects a push to upgrade infrastructure and fund major roadway improvements.
